I’m way behind on posting concert photos. Today’s photos are from two weeks ago with Brynna Dean and Thelma and the Sleaze. I’ll catch up… someday… maybe…

The rumor I mentioned a couple weeks ago is true. November 20 is the big day, and Club 66 is the place.

These two 17-year olds from Bend can really bring it. I haven’t heard a high-school-aged band sound this good since I saw The Legacy (pre-Testament) play back in 1983 or Death Angel in 1987.

An all-ages, early show is happening at Club 66 today (9/14/14). Things begin at 5 p.m. Come a bit early and Uzi will cook you up some dinner or a late breakfast. I’m mostly looking forward to GraveWitch, a two-piece “Melodic Blackened Thrash Metal” band from Bend.

Where to watch football in Ashland

De’Anthony Thomas – beginning of 86 yard kickoff return – Oregon Ducks football

Of course if you want live football, AHS is the place to be today. However, after today’s SOU game you may want more. Or maybe you are a fan of the NFL and want to watch with a crowd instead of by yourself in your living room.

The #3 Ducks play #7 Michigan State after the Raiders’ game this afternoon. The obvious choices of places to watch the game in Ashland are Red Zone, Louie’s, Northwest Pizza, or Omars. However, if you have been to any or all of these places on game day you know that the crowds can be too big, and the service can become very slow.

A new option is Club 66. Uzi has five or six TVs going now, with up to three different DirecTV stations playing simultaneously, including a 10′ projection screen. He also has 6 beers on tap (and more in cans and bottles). But this next item may be the clincher for some of you. Pitchers of ANY beer (including Ninkasi’s Total Domination IPA and other micro draft beers) are just $10! That’s about the cost of two pints at the other places.

The Sunday breakfast deal is also a bargain.

Attention Eugene and Portland! Section 5150 is coming, and you don’t want to miss them. Section 5150 features some super nice guys, but more importantly they shred.

Tonight’s show (9/4/14) is at the Black Forest in Eugene. Tomorrow’s show (9/5/14) is at the Hawthorne Theatre.

Club 66 also has scheduled some metal, Section 5150 “with Special Guests”. That show is supposed to start at 9 p.m. I’m hoping to catch some of it after the Musichead show.

From “fan” to “in the band”

insanity's reign club 66

The stories are legendary. A fan goes to a show to support a favorite band.

One thing leads to another, and before you know it, they become a roadie for the band.

Then someone gets sick and they “fill in” on a “temporary” basis.

In the end, they will be playing guitar and/or singing lead on vocals.

Be very careful bands who you invite to shows because they tend to take over.

Some examples:
Eric Bloom took on the title “sound engineer” before switching it to “tour manager” for the band Soft White Underbelly. Before long their singer mysteriously dropped out of the band and Bloom stepped in on guitar and lead vocals, changing the band’s name to Blue Öyster Cult in the process. 40+ years later he still runs the show.

Harald Oimoen took photos of D.R.I. He worked that into a gig selling merchandise for them before taking on the title “bass tech”. The D.R.I. bassist became “tired” and Harald took over on bass duties to finish out a tour. This has lasted for the past 15+ years.

Tim “Ripper” Owens sung for a Judas Priest tribute band called British Steel. Rob Halford left Judas Priest due to “internal tensions within the band” (yeah right, like a band is really going to have any internal tensions), and Ripper stepped into Halford’s role.

Frank Bello was Anthrax’s roadie in the early days, but for the past 30 years he has served as the band’s bassist and acrobat.

Then there is the little guy in today’s photos… I highly suspect he is attempting a similar coup.
