Home State BBQ & Beer
With the closure of Roscoe’s BBQ in Phoenix early last year, a void was left between Medford and Yreka for a BBQ joint. I thought someone would fill that niche quickly, but it took more than a year. Last week Home State BBQ & Beer opened on the corner of Gresham and East Main in the old Evo’s location.
We gave it a try this past Sunday. The mist maker on the patio was a nice touch given the heat. The inside was full, and the patio wouldn’t have been very hospitable (even in the shade) without the moisture. Another lovely feature was the cold, wet napkins.
Six beers were on tap and more were in bottles in the fridge. Sandwiches (pulled pork, chicken, or brisket) were $9, but we opted to split a full order of the brisket so that we could try out some sides too. The brisket was very good–not the best BBQ I’ve ever had but not average enough to keep me from wanting to return. The sides were OK at best. The mac and cheese could have been Annie’s for all I know. I won’t be ordering it again. The potato salad wasn’t nearly as good as Sammich’s.
I’ll probably try a sandwich next time. Next time I have sides I will go for something different, maybe the Butcher’s Green Chili or just a Green Salad. You can see the full menu here.
