Rogue River (Oregon)

When everyone’s commencement ceremonies went virtual due to COVID-19, and all of the graduates were at home from their seven different universities anyway, we did a small commencement in North Mountain Park. Infections? Zero.

Ashland Creek in Lithia Park

Yesterday was one of those summer days that I’m not particularly fond of. Today will likely be the same. What am I referring to as I long for my usual Scandinavian summer? The heat!

Mornings are nice, and the evenings, after the sun goes down, are lovely, but the afternoons and evenings before sunset are brutal at close to 100 degrees. To try to beat the heat yesterday my daughter had the brilliant idea of doing a creek walk in Lithia Park. Simply walk into the freezing cold creek and walk upstream to cool down. Yesterday was so hot that we were still hot, both during and after. Anyway, today’s photo comes from that walk.

Comet NEOWISE

To the naked eye the comet didn’t look this clear, as the lights on Ridge and light pollution coming from Medford made Comet NEOWISE difficult to see last night from this vantage point. Maybe I’ll try a different location tonight.

South Fork Lakes Trail (Trinity Alps, California)

We made another expedition into the Trinity Alps yesterday. These hikes are a bit over an hour an half south of Ashland. We’ve done at least a half dozen of them by now. AllTrails clocks this one in a 4.1 miles round trip which is an underestimate. Our various apps came in at somewhere between 5 and 7 miles. Factor in the elevation changes, my bad back, and my old age, and I’m giving this one a solid 15 miles. 😉

Seriously, though, the Upper South Fork Lake is gorgeous and well worth the effort.
