Fun fact #3: Win, lose, or draw in Daytona, no NAIA team will finish the 2014 football season with more wins than the Raiders. 12 wins is not only a record for the Raiders, it is also more wins than any team in the NAIA has achieved this year. Let’s make it lucky number 13 for good measure.
P.S. Today’s photo, and these photos, were taken with the Tamron 150-600mm lens–a lens mostly marketed to, and used by, wildlife photographers. I found it to work rather well on the “wild life” found on a football field.

Fun fact #2: When all is said and done, SOU will have played 15 football games this year–50% more games than many teams. Most NAIA teams play 10 or 11 games in a season.

Fun fact: No football team in the NAIA will finish the 2014 season with fewer than two losses. However, if SOU defeats Marian next week in the National Championship Game, they will be the only team to have a non-losing record against each and every one of their opponents. Southern Oregon University was 2-1 against Carroll College and 1-1 against Eastern Oregon University.

A similar scene to today’s photo will happen not in 9 days but in a mere 5 days. If you’d like to help the team get to Daytona, or if you’d like to ride on the flight with them, see this article for details.

We are currently fostering a couple of dogs for the Jackson County Animal Shelter. We will have them until a new owner comes forward or two weeks, whichever comes first.

Once again, Hensley Ratings showed that they know more about which teams are better than the coaches. The NAIA Championship Game in Florida next week (12/19/14) looks, on paper (based on the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll), like a surprising #8 seed (SOU) vs. a surprising #7 seed (Marian). However, when the final computer rankings came out a few weeks ago, the Raiders were #2 and Marian was #3. As I mentioned before, the Carroll vs. SOU quarterfinal game pitted the top two teams against each other and SOU came out on top.
So don’t be surprised that Southern Oregon University and Marian University Indianapolis made it to the finals. Be surprised that they weren’t awarded home games for the quarter and semifinals.

The Southern Oregon University volleyball team took down #8 Columbia in pool play today at the national tournament. A win tomorrow against #4-ranked Texas Brownsville or on Thursday against #21 Vanguard should move them on to the next round, a single-elimination affair with the other best 11 teams in the country.
Emma Gasman and Tade Atanda were the key players in today’s victory, a 3-1 result. More details can be found here.
