I was reminded on the plane back from Iowa, where the Raiders beat #1 Morningside to earn another trip to Daytona for the national championship, that I should do another “Countdown to Daytona” like I did last year.
So here goes…
14 days and counting…
Expect a photo a day here between now and the game on December 19, 2015.

Congratulations to Tyana Andrews and Emma Gasman for being named 2015 Daktronics-NAIA Volleyball Scholar-Athletes. In order to be a recipient of the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete award, the athlete must be a junior or above with at least a 3.5 GPA. Tyana and Emma were key contributors to SOU’s team this year, a team which finished the season with their most wins in 11 years. Details here.

With tonight’s victory of Midland over Coastal Georgia (and SOU’s 3-1 loss to Vanguard), the Raider’s season will come to an end tomorrow with a consolation match against Coastal Georgia. At this point, Southern Oregon will be playing Thursday for a crack at the top 20 in the final rankings. They won’t be able to play in the 12-team final bracket play that begins on Friday.
The Raiders didn’t go down without a fight. SOU won two against Midland yesterday (and nearly won the match) and dominated Vanguard in a set today, but they came up just short of a shot at cracking the top 12.
With only two seniors on the current team, they will be back next year.

Currently it’s 16 degrees in Sioux City with the wind chill factor, and it’s the afternoon. Saturday’s forecast is for the 30s. Hopefully, that wind chill goes away in the next few days. In any event, I’ll be thinking about today’s image to try and keep warm.

I previously mentioned how Carroll College was going to begin feeding computer rankings to NAIA voting coaches (for men’s basketball) in order to improve the coaches’ poll. That process has begun. You can see the results by comparing the Sagarin Ratings with the latest coaches’ poll.
Unlike the football rankings (in which the coaches will frequently put teams in the top 20–and even the top 10–that Massey Ratings doesn’t have in their top 40), these are fairly close. I’m not sure how much of it has to do with Carroll’s efforts. SOU is ranked #13 by the coaches and #11 by Sagarin.
