Snowshoeing on Crater Lake’s West Rim Drive

Although Crater Lake’s snow pack is less than 30% of normal for this time of year, it is one of the few places in Southern Oregon with any snow. After bailing on our attempt to snowshoe near the Upper Rogue River due to lack of snow, we did enjoy a walk from the Rim Village to Discovery Point in 60 degree temperatures. Snowshoes weren’t absolutely necessary, but they were useful at times.

Southern Oregon University in the snow (early December 2013)

Ashland received a large amount of rain this past week, but with temperatures in the 50s, not even Grizzly Peak has snow on it.

SOU snow

No, the winter without precipitation hasn’t changed its course. Instead, my random, desktop image of the day is from the archives. This photo comes from November of 2010. We normally get about 3″ of wet stuff in November. There was none this past November. We normally get an average of about 3″ of snow and another 3″ of rain in January. Not so this year.

I’m sure it’s a white Christmas somewhere, maybe even in Ashland, but in Santa Barbara, no one even considers the thought. Today’s photo comes from the snow storm that hit Ashland almost three weeks ago. It still hadn’t fully melted when we left for California on December 21.

The campus is quiet now, very quiet. So quiet that I’m not even there. I’m in sunny California.

Today’s photo is from a couple weeks ago when it was also very quiet even though school was still on. Actually, it was cancelled on this day due to the snow.
