Photos taken at Saturday’s football game in Ashland against Webber International University.
Classes begin at Southern Oregon University on Monday, but the fall sports are already well underway. Today’s photo is a scene from last night’s volleyball victory at the SOU McNeil Pavilion.
I tried out my new 80-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor lens and am happy with the results.
I took this on 9/10/11. Next home game for the Lady Raiders is 9/23. I’m hoping the lens I have purchased since I took today’s photo (Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D) will allow me to take a shot like this with less blur. I took this with settings of f/4.5 and 1/200 of a second (ISO 1600) with my 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 Nikkor lens in poor, indoor, gymnasium lighting. With my new lens I should be able to do something like f/2.8 and 1/320 with better results. Stay tuned.

This was the first year that professors formed a gauntlet since commencement moved from Lithia Park in 2003. I thought we should have done the tunnel like at kids' soccer games, but Dennis opted for low fives instead.

I think this is the first year that students (half of them anyway) marched in in front of the grand stands.

Bill Rauch, of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, was the main speaker at 2011 Commencement. He must have said something funny at this point.

After an hour or so of names being read, I amused myself with photos of graduation cap decoration ideas.

Funny story... Actually, look at this photo long and hard to see if you can see what is "funny" about it first.
Did you see it?
Someone's camera got in the way of the guy's hands on the far right. When I tried to remove the camera from the photo in Photoshop, Photoshop was "smart" enough to realize that hands were missing so it substituted the other guy's hands in the far right guy's "hand place" too. I would have just undone it and left it with the camera blocking the lower right portion of the photo, but I thought this looked too funny to not keep.
You can watch some of Wenjun’s Senior Recital here.
I have about 60 decent photos from Southern Oregon University’s graduation ceremony this morning. I’ll post them in two installments. This first set of pictures will consist of 10, and the next one will have 50. If you were there, there is a chance you are in at least one of these images.
Wenjun Qi is a music major at SOU from China. She gave me pointers on my trip to China last year before we had even met. It was a friend of a friend kind of thing. But now I see her on campus all the time. I look forward to our meetings as she always has such a big smile on her face. On May 22 she performed her senior recital in the Music Recital Hall on campus.
Here is a video of her performing “Libra Sonatine” by Roland Dyens in three movements, India, Largo, and Fuoco.
SOAR has been going on the past few days at SOU. Wednesday featured a series of musical performances on the lawn in front of Britt Hall. One was this ensemble entitled, “The Horn: From the Forest to the Concert Hall.” We received a lesson in the evolution of the horn, from the one on the left to the modern horns to the right.
A couple weeks ago a new sign appeared on the SOU campus right about where I took this photo. The path that cuts through the middle of campus (what some university’s call “the quad”) has been dubbed “Raider Way.” Raider is the school mascot (SOU Raiders).
Upon closer inspection you can find out how far it is to the library, the dorms, the HEC in Medford, and a few other places.
SOU has partnerships with Dankook University in Korea and Guanajuato University in Mexico. I have taught in Guanajuato and hope to teach at Dankook next summer.
Churchill Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus looks best in early May I think. These ornamental cherry blossoms (I think?) literally weigh these trees down.
