Snowy Ashland Springs Hotel

Today’s photo was my random desktop image of the day. I took this picture of Ashland’s most famous hotel back in February on a snowy day in town. I left the shutter on my LX3 open for 8 seconds.

Horses in the snow

Riders on the storm

We had a bit of snow this morning, not as much as in this picture from a few weeks ago. Notice the semi trucks in the background chaining up on I-5 before heading over the Siskiyou Summit.

Main Street

East Main Street in Ashland features many of Ashland’s well-known places such as the Ashland Springs Hotel, Travel Essentials, and the Columbia Hotel. The latter two are in the Enders Building (on the National Register of Historic Places), built in 1910. I believe the Columbia Hotel has been running in this location for over a hundred years now. Also notice the Oregon Shakespeare Festival heraldic banner.

Blue sky and snow

Blue sky normally means instant death to snow in Ashland, but we were treated to a rare spectacle in late February. Today (March 9) Grizzly Peak, although still snow capped, looked a bit green and we hit 60 degrees, a sure sign that Spring is not far away.

Breakfast View

Today was raining, but this past weekend featured some really nice blue skies to go along with snow. I’ve shown this view before. It’s the scene from my dining room while I’m eating breakfast. Every day looks different and this one was a good one.

Varsity Theatre

The Ashland Independent Film Festival is just around the corner. This will be the 10th year for the annual festival. Most showings take place in the art-deco Varsity Theatre, pictured here, in downtown Ashland. The neon lights have been burning brightly on this theater since 1937.

Tennis anyone?

Saturday morning featured a beautiful, blue sky and temperatures in the 20s. Very little snow melted, due to the temperature, which is very unusual for sunny, winter days in Ashland.

Skating in the Park

For the last few days you had your choice of skating (per the blue sign), skiing, snow shoeing, or snow booting it through Lithia Park. I chose the latter although the others sounded funner.

The buildings in the background are part of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Ashland School Closures (or not)

We have more snow today than yesterday on the roads, and it is several degrees colder. But yesterday school was cancelled and today the Ashland School District will be in session. My kids are disappointed.

No school today

All classes have been cancelled in the Ashland School District today. SOU hasn’t made an announcement yet. I’m not teaching today, but I’m guessing SOU will close as well.

Today’s photo is the view from my computer chair just a few minutes ago. You can’t really see it in the picture, but the snow is coming down fast and furiously.
