United Buddy Bears
United Buddy Bears in Berlin, Germany (July 2017)
I had no idea what these were when I visited Berlin a few summers ago. They were all over the place, dozens of them.
Turns out they started in Berlin in 2001 and have since traveled around the world. Recently they were in Guatemala but may be back in Berlin now.
Oberbaumbrücke
The Oberbaum Bridge crossed between the American and Soviet sections of post-WW2 Berlin. Until the mid-1950s, pedestrians, motor vehicles, and the city tramway were able to cross the bridge without difficulty. However, when the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, the bridge became part of East Berlin’s border with West Berlin.

30 years ago the Berlin Wall came down. Three years ago this memorial mural went up. Two years ago I took this photo.

The world’s best-known LGBT event takes place today in Berlin. One million people will participate in the festivities. The parade procession runs from Kurfürstendamm to Brandenburger Tor, where the grand final rally will take place.
