Sanpoji (三宝寺)
One day in Tokyo I headed west on my bike on Waseda Dori (from my apartment near Waseda University) and just kept going. After several miles I got on Old Waseda Dori (Kyu Waseda Dori or 旧早稲田通り) and ended up at Shakujii, a wonderful area of parks, shrines, Buddhist temples, and ponds. Today’s photo comes from one of those temples. It must have been spring time as the irises were in bloom in this pic.
Food (and flower) shop in Nishiwaseda
The sign above this ancient business says the business is called Matsuya and the product is food. I walked past this place hundreds of times in Tokyo and never once saw a customer. Occasionally I saw an old person inside, sleeping in a chair waiting for a customer. I wondered how long this store had been there. 40 years? 60 years? Could it have actually survived the war? Probably not. My best guess is that it went up shortly after the war but probably was rebuilt to look just like the pre-war store.
食料品店 means the store sells food; however, the only food-like items are in the vending machines outside the store. All I ever saw were flowers and plants–and not really nice, fresh ones like the other flower stores in Tokyo. These flowers always had an old and about-to-die look, sort of like the rest of the place.

Toshi’s Ramen
Another photo today that could have been taken in Japan but wasn’t. The place was Toshi’s Ramen in Eugene, Oregon. I may head up I-5 to a Duck’s game soon and will have to stop in for some ramen while I’m there.
Buddha under a blue sky
Today’s photo isn’t from Japan, although I suppose it could be. I took this photo of the Buddha just prior to the sunset in my hometown of Ashland, Oregon.
