I happened to be flying from the USA to northern Europe just a day or two after last year’s Summer solstice. The plane flew over the bottom of Greenland and I was sitting in a window seat on the left side of the plane. The sun never completely set. Today’s photo is about as low as the sun got in the sky before rising once again.
That’s the Park Hyatt Tokyo on the far left, famous, in part, because of its prominent role in the movie, Lost in Translation.

A minute or two before taking this photo of Mt. Fuji I was able to capture today’s pic of part of Tokyo with Mt. Fuji as the background.
Bergen from Mount Floyen
Bergen gets more than 200 days of precipitation a year (sometimes over 250), but the two days I was there were beautiful. Today’s photo is from Mount Floyen. You can walk there, but I didn’t have enough time so I took the funicular up the mountain for this view.

The waterway through the center of this picture is Prinsengracht (Prince’s Canal), which runs in front of the Anne Frank Museum. The line of people at the bottom-center of the photograph is for the Anne Frank Museum. I don’t know if the queue is this long all year long or just the summer, but it didn’t get significantly shorter as the day went on. I initially came to this spot in the morning, but the line was so long that I decided to come back in the afternoon, hoping that the queue would fizzle out (sort of like the line does at St. Peter’s and the Vatican) in the afternoon. The line was a bit shorter later in the day but not much.
One of the places we didn’t get a chance to visit the first time we were in Copenhagen was Vor Frelser Kirke, a famous church in Christianshavn. Once I had a bike, I made it my first stop.
The Church of Our Saviour is easily recognizable because of its gold, corkscrew spire which has had a continual line of tourists walking up it for 250+ years.
I went up as soon as it opened so there were few around, allowing me to take photos like this overlooking Copenhagen. By the time I was ready to go down, though, I had to wait for dozens of people to come out of the narrow passage before I could descend. There are far more steps to get to the top than I anticipated. The interior of the bell tower (carillon) can be easily viewed as you make your way up the tower. I imagine the sound is deafening if you happen to be going up or down while the bells are ringing.
