Guy loses his pants in Kreator's mosh pit
Notice the guy who was in the process of losing his pants in Kreator’s mosh pit at the Getaway Rock Festival. Everyone was having a good time, but some seem to be taking that fun to another level. 😉
I actually have a photo of him completely naked on the next lap around the pit, but you don’t want to see that one.

Ghost at Getaway Rock Festival
Did you know that Ghost will be touring the US and Canada beginning next month? It’s true. Perhaps you can see them in person. The best part is that you won’t just get Ghost’s short set (they only have one CD). They are opening for my current favorite band, Enslaved. The two bands couldn’t be much more different so it will be interesting to see what people coming for Enslaved think of Ghost and what those coming for Ghost think of Enslaved.

I would love to see Ghost and Enslaved again, but considering I’ve seen them both twice now, and they aren’t playing anywhere near my location, I will not be making the road trip for these two bands this time around.
Here is a video I took of Ghost covering The Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun”. Sorry for the poor audio on the bass. I was using auto sensitivity on my camera‘s audio, and I later learned that low sensitivity, instead of auto, works much better for loud concerts.

There was a lot of buzz in the air at the Getaway Rock Festival in Gavle, Sweden about Ghost. Ghost is from Sweden, but since they are a new band, most of the Swedish people (but not me) had yet to experience them live. Beyond the fans, the other bands wanted to check them out as well. I saw most of the members of Death Angel go in (very excitedly I might add) to see Ghost. Corrosion of Conformity mentioned during their set that they were eager to see Ghost as well.
But I’m getting ahead of my story a bit… Let’s back up.
My GRF schedule, that I had printed out a week or so before the festival, indicated that Ghost was playing on the second day of the festival. On the first day, after Death Angel and Corrosion of Conformity, there was nothing of interest to me until Alice Cooper late at night. So I found my hotel and decided to take a long nap since I had so little sleep the night before. I couldn’t sleep too long (as my room was near the front door of the hotel and I could hear it open every time someone came in or went out) and after a while I decided to head back to the festival.
A huge line was forming for the indoor stage, the longest for any band of the entire festival it turns out.

I decided I should get a new schedule in case anything had changed from my print out. Sure enough, Ghost had been bumped from July 8 to July 7 and had been given an earlier time slot. This line was for Ghost. Yikes, had I slept longer I would have missed them. I got in line to enter, but the place filled up, and it appeared that I wasn’t going to get in (along with many others).
Then I noticed someone else with a photo pass flash it to the door guard and in they went. I used my fast pass (photo pass) to do the same and in I went too. Yeah baby!
Ghost performed the exact same set as they did at the Roskilde Festival to a very appreciative crowd. Unfortunately, many people that wanted to see them could not get in. They are turning into quite the viral band with these kinds of things happening to them.

On the final day (of three, July 7, 8, and 9) of the Getaway Rock Festival I arrived at about 7 p.m. to catch Nifelheim’s performance. Bands had been playing since 11:30 a.m. on all three stages but nothing was of interest until these guys. I figured I would never have a chance to see them again, given that they’ve played only one or two shows in the USA, to my knowledge, in their 20-year history.

Amorphis at Getaway Rock Festival 2011
I was curious to see Amorphis at GRF. I had heard a few songs of theirs that sounded pretty good.
Amorphis came on right after a downpour that soaked most of the crowd. I lucked out in that I was eating some Thai food in one of only a few places that provided shelter during the deluge. The rain stopped after just a few minutes, and I headed over to the Bandit Rock Stage.

Amorphis reminded me, a bit, of Nightwish–OK to listen to on occasion but ultimately a bit boring. I have nothing against metal bands going melodic and/or progressive, but they should vary things more often, with at least some faster riffs, to keep it interesting.
Dream Theater is another band that comes to mind. There are only a couple of DT songs, after their first CD, that I can stand to listen to at this point. I’m hoping that Opeth isn’t going this same route. I’m worried that their new CD, Heritage, will not have enough heavy elements and be too mellow to keep me awake (or wanting to listen to it often).
I’m certainly not knocking all bands that evolve into something more progressive and melodic than their early days. Bands that have successfully mellowed over time, IMO, include: Enslaved, Katatonia, Anathema, Mastodon, Dark Tranquility, and Amon Amarth.
