Staying in business

Miyajima priest

The key to maintaining a business for a long time, especially this one which has been going on for hundreds of years, is to extract cash for services rendered. I’m not sure how much this lady had to pay for individual treatment from the priest. However, it’s well documented that Katsu Kaishu (勝海舟), in trying to give his famous peace sword to Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社), was denied the privilege. Instead, he had to pay them to take it. I wonder if they still have it, or if they sold it to someone else.

Daishoin dragon

One of my favorite temple experiences in Japan was Daishoin on Miyajima. In large part this was because it was raining a bit, and I had the whole place to myself.

Footprint of the Buddha

仏足跡

Bet you didn’t know the Buddha had a swastika on each toe. Well he did, at least before WWII, and still in parts of Japan where the swastika doesn’t have the negative image it has earned nearly everywhere else in the world.

Believers are encouraged to take their shoes off, stand on the Buddha’s footprints, say a few words, and get lucky. This is found at Miyajima’s Daishoin.
