Bergen from Mount Floyen
Bergen gets more than 200 days of precipitation a year (sometimes over 250), but the two days I was there were beautiful. Today’s photo is from Mount Floyen. You can walk there, but I didn’t have enough time so I took the funicular up the mountain for this view.
Most scenic train line in the world?
Today we have another peek out the moving-train window while I was doing “Norway in a Nutshell” last month.

Before getting to the fjords (going into actually) or the Flåm Railway when experiencing “Norway in a Nutshell” you get to ride on the Bergen Railway Line which features views such as the above. The scenery is always changing on this train from Oslo to Bergen. Sometimes you’ll see farms, wildflowers, waterfalls, cute Norwegian houses, lakes, fjords, glaciers, rivers, or forests. You never know, but it’s pretty much all good. From Bergen to Oslo getting a window seat on the left side of the train is probably best.

I jumped ahead of the chronological order of Norway in a Nutshell in my prior posts, taking you straight to the fjord. The views don’t begin at the fjords (nor do they begin with the photos in today’s entry).

Assuming you are coming from Oslo, the train between Myrdal to Flam, the Flam Railway, is loaded with amazing scenery as well.
Norway in a Nutshell
“Norway in a Nutshell” is the name put together for a trip along the Bergen Railway Line that includes the Flåm Railway (the steepest unassisted railway in the world) down from Myrdal to Flam, a boat ride in an amazing fjord for a couple of hours, and a bus ride from Gudvangen to Voss. Where you start and end is up to you, and the price varies based on passes you may already have and where you begin and end your journey. I had a Eurail Pass so it costed me very little.
Norway’s fjords are absolutely amazing. Sometimes photos don’t do them justice because you can’t really tell how impressive the size is from a picture. I like this next photo because you can see just how tiny the boat in the fjord is compared to the fjord itself. (That’s a boat and the boat’s wake to the left of the photo. You may need to click on the image after maximizing your browser to see it well.) I was also on a boat in the middle of the fjord at the time I took this.

Norway was a fine trip these past four days. The weather was fantastic. I did the “Norway In A Nutshell” leg from Oslo to Bergen (and back) on the Bergen Line. At Myrdal you can get on a different train and go down to Flam where the Aurlandsfjord, pictured above, begins.
