Mastodon at Roskilde Festival 2011 (and some crowd shots)

The crowd at Roskilde Festival prepares for Mastodon's appearance.

I’m off to Sweden for three days of music. Expect some photos of Death Angel, Corrosion of Conformity, Alice Cooper, Marduk, Amorphis, Danzig, Kreator, Ghost, Opeth, Nifelheim, Accept, Enslaved, and Immortal next week. Before I go, here are some more photos from Roskilde Festival 2011 last week.

Mastodon was outstanding, even better than I was hoping. It was my first time seeing them in person, and I was fortunate to get to take them in from every vantage point. I started out pretty much on stage and then roamed through the crowd, who seemed to be getting into the band no matter how far from the stage they were.

Roskilde Festival 2011

Sorry for presenting these photos in such small installments, but, as of this writing, I have only been taking them in small doses myself. I have about 1,000 photos from the day, and have only looked at a hundred or so.

The big stage (Orange Stage) with Mastodon playing at Roskilde 2011

Last week was one of the largest music festivals in the world, the annual Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Over 100,000 were there, and I was one of them on Friday. My participation is a rather long story, that I may tell at some point, but for now I’ll just share a few photos I took.

The Ghoul With No Name

I’m in Sweden at the Getaway Rock Festival for the next three days. In my absence I will leave you with three days of “ghost blogging.” This is Ghost, a band with no member names from Sweden. They will also be performing at the Getaway Rock Festival on Friday night, but these photos I took at the Roskilde Festival 2011 in Denmark last week.

Are you scared yet?

Ghost played on the Odeon Stage at Roskilde. Don’t take all the Satanic garb and lyrics too seriously; the members don’t seem to either as evidenced by their cover of the Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun.” Their songs are very catchy–sort of a cross between Blue Oyster Cult and Mercyful Fate. The audience had a great time and sang along throughout even though they don’t believe in Satan any more than they believe in gods or Santa Claus. At one point, just before Ghost came on stage, the crowd started chanting “Sa-tan sa-tan sa-tan…” before bursting into laughter. Scandinavia can have some fun with the religions of the Dark Ages as they turn all of the churches into museums, restaurants, and art galleries. When will the rest of the world?
