As the sun began to set we rode the train back to Tokyo from Nikko in February. The scenery of snow-covered rice paddies was beautiful. I would have loved to have jumped out of the train for a minute to take proper photos at several places. Instead, I can only offer this small taste of the actual scene from inside a rapidly moving train, complete with reflection off the glass on the left which messes things up a bit.
I took today’s photo from Shinjuku in Tokyo. I used my TZ7 (which I eventually sold to a friend in Starbucks in Shibuya–I hope it is still treating my friend well) at maximum zoom which equates to over a 400mm focal length on the 35mm scale. The camera is not supposed to go beyond 300mm, but with certain settings you can bump it up higher than that. The photo has not been cropped.
If you talk to people in Tokyo, you’ll find that some haven’t seen Mt. Fuji in years or even decades. I met one who claimed to have never seen Mt. Fuji. That’s not because they can’t see it from Tokyo (although buildings block most views), they just don’t bother to look. I, on the other hand, couldn’t go more than a few weeks without finding a location from which I could view Mt. Fuji while living in Tokyo.
My random desktop image today of Mt. Fuji takes my mind back to the day I took this photo. A wonderful sensation…
Some days Mt. Fuji is there for the seeing but it can’t be seen. The humidity and brightness of the sun turn the sky and everything in the distance more or less white. On those days, as the sun drops Fuji San makes its appearance. I think this fisherman was too busy to notice.
You may remember this view from an earlier post. This shot, from Ebisu Garden Place Tower, was taken as the sun set to the west (left side of photo). You are looking north up the Yamanote Line to Shibuya and then Shinjuku in the distance.

Christmas Eve in Phuket featured an excellent sunset. We looked for a place to eat on the beach but couldn’t find anything that would satisfy us all. We ended up going down an alley just to the north of McDonald’s and eating at a place called S&G Restaurant. The food was really good, the prices were cheap, and the staff was friendly. I ordered a creamy curry which was the best curry I have ever had.
This is the main drag (Thawiwong Road) by the beach. Eat at one of these places if you want to pay more for lesser quality food.
You can eat really inexpensively by eating at one of these stalls. This one is in Phuket’s night life center on Bangla Road.
