Iceland’s most famous hot springs are also its most expensive, most crowded, and closest to the KEF airport. I had more enjoyable experiences at other hot springs in Iceland, but I still recommend the Blue Lagoon if, and only if, you get there before the crowds do.

Later this month I’ll be booking my tickets for Europe this summer. If my flight goes through Iceland on my way to Copenhagen, again, I will likely spend a couple nights north of Reykjavik. The Blue Lagoon won’t be on my agenda this year. Instead I’ll try to get to places like the fjords in the northwestern part of Iceland. Any suggestions for particular “must sees”?

Another possibility is a couple nights in Frankfurt, Germany on my way in. Any fans of Frankfurt who would encourage that option? I’ve been to Berlin but only the airport in Frankfurt.

I arrived at the Blue Lagoon shortly after it opened which was awesome because hardly anyone was there, unlike the normal crowds. However, the sky was overcast and the “blue” lagoon was actually quite gray. Today’s photo comes from a couple hours later when I was about to leave. The waters were far more crowded, but the sun began to peak through the clouds and turn the lagoon blue.
