In the latter part of the last decade, Max Gordon was starring for the Ashland High School Baseball Team. Now he plays center field for Oregon State. He has made several, stunning diving catches this season. For instance, this past Sunday he made one of the most miraculous dives I have ever seen.
In a pitcher’s league (the Pac-12), Michael Conforto can hit. He leads the #4 ranked Beavers in pretty much every offensive category. He gets on base nearly half the time and is slugging over .520. He hit two homers in the weekend series with the Ducks. He is only a sophomore.
On Friday night the Ducks were on top of the world. With a 3-0 lead heading into the 9th inning, and a share of 1st place in the Pac-12 within sight, all seemed to be going their way. The Beavers then loaded the bases in time for this photo. The batter, Danny Hayes, hit a rocket to right that could have evened things up, or put the Beavers ahead, but the ball went foul. The Ducks hung on to win the game and move into a tie for first. However, losses on Saturday and Sunday to the Beavers make it unlikely that anyone will be able to catch the Oregon State team with just three conference games to go.
I spent the past couple days in Eugene. Today’s photo is from yesterday’s Civil War game with Oregon State University at PK Park. It was a tight game until the last few innings when OSU opened up their offensive attack and ended up blowing out the Ducks 9-0. The winner of today’s game (at noon) in Eugene (the last in the three-game series) will likely win the Pac-12 Conference Championship. Both teams are ranked in the NCAA Top Ten.
I have a few hundred photos from the game. How many do you want to see?
