Continuing to follow the evolution of my neighbor’s pink flamingo lawn ornaments…

Congratulations to Kristen Schoenherr and Carly Meister for maintaining a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale as a junior or senior while leading the Raiders to the Sweet 16 this year.

The SOU men’s basketball team landed four players on the 2014-15 Daktronics-NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athletes list. The players were Justin Martin, Eric Thompson, Tim Weber, and Joel Spear.
Details here.
The blossoms are all gone now, but last week (during a shower) they looked like they do in today’s photo.
Ten years ago this tree looked like this.
Now the little girl that was under that tree in 2005 drives the blossom-covered car pictured under this same tree.
I spent today watching volleyball at SOU (although today’s photo is from last month). Although most of the teams were Southern Oregon club teams, one was made up of mostly SOU volleyball players and alumni. It was fun watching my little (6’2″) 16-year old (#4 in this photo) go up against players like Sarah Holgen and Paulla Pinheiro.
Next up (March 27-29, 2015) is a tournament in Spokane, Washington during spring break.

The Southern Oregon men’s basketball team upset #10 Midland University earlier today to move on to the next round of the NAIA Championship Tourney. The SOU women won yesterday. The women will play at 6:30 a.m. PST on Friday (3/13/15), and the men will play at about 11:45 a.m. Details and links to live stats and video here.
As I mentioned before, with a large amount of NAIA teams (and NAIA headquarters) coming out of the middle part of the country, there is bias in the polling against teams not from the Midwest. This is especially true for football, where the Frontier Conference is routinely snubbed, but the CCC is showing this is true for basketball as well. The Cascade Conference is 5-1 in the tournament so far, and even the one loss could have gone the other way.
SOU will be the favorite in both of Friday’s games so hopefully there will be no upsets in the Round of 16. This is the first time both teams have been in the Sweet 16 in school history.

The walls of the McNeal Pavilion are packed with photos of SOU’s student-athletes of the past decades. There is no space for more. So in what was likely my last photo opportunity in McNeal today, I took some photos for the future building that will be taking its place in fall of 2016.
