Buddy Guy @ Britt Festival 2014

I had no plans to take photos at the Buddy Guy and Peter Frampton show at Britt in Jacksonville last night. In fact, I didn’t even bring my camera. But when Buddy Guy practically ended up in my lap at this point in the evening, I did take this quick cell phone shot.

From “fan” to “in the band”

insanity's reign club 66

The stories are legendary. A fan goes to a show to support a favorite band.

One thing leads to another, and before you know it, they become a roadie for the band.

Then someone gets sick and they “fill in” on a “temporary” basis.

In the end, they will be playing guitar and/or singing lead on vocals.

Be very careful bands who you invite to shows because they tend to take over.

Some examples:
Eric Bloom took on the title “sound engineer” before switching it to “tour manager” for the band Soft White Underbelly. Before long their singer mysteriously dropped out of the band and Bloom stepped in on guitar and lead vocals, changing the band’s name to Blue Öyster Cult in the process. 40+ years later he still runs the show.

Harald Oimoen took photos of D.R.I. He worked that into a gig selling merchandise for them before taking on the title “bass tech”. The D.R.I. bassist became “tired” and Harald took over on bass duties to finish out a tour. This has lasted for the past 15+ years.

Tim “Ripper” Owens sung for a Judas Priest tribute band called British Steel. Rob Halford left Judas Priest due to “internal tensions within the band” (yeah right, like a band is really going to have any internal tensions), and Ripper stepped into Halford’s role.

Frank Bello was Anthrax’s roadie in the early days, but for the past 30 years he has served as the band’s bassist and acrobat.

Then there is the little guy in today’s photos… I highly suspect he is attempting a similar coup.

Wehrmacht @ Musichead (Medford, Oregon – 7/10/14)

It’s been nearly a month since Raptor and Wehrmacht buzzed through Southern Oregon. Other than the one photo I posted earlier, I hadn’t looked at those photos until today. Looks like I have a dozen or more decent ones that I need to process…

I’ll get to the rest later. For now I will leave you with this one of the end of the evening. Wehrmacht has a tradition of calling members of the audience to the stage at the end of their set. This makes more sense in venues with a large stage. Musichead’s stage is barely big enough for a small band, let alone audience members and a 5-piece band. However, that didn’t stop Wehrmacht from packing the stage. James Lind, of Sylent Storm, did a fantastic Paul Di’Anno impression as the guest vocalist on this Iron Maiden cover. Members of Raptor can also be seen on stage in this photo.

Penitent, Burney Chair, and Exhausted Prayer @ Club 66 tomorrow (8/6/14)

Tomorrow night features the return of Exhausted Prayer to Southern Oregon. I wish I could be in two places at once, but I will be in the front row at Coors Field (enroute to Mexico) instead of at Club 66.

Today’s photo comes from last night’s show which also featured Penitent.

The August 6 show is all ages and will begin shortly after 5 p.m. so bring your kids and have Uzi make you dinner before the bands hit the stage.

There is a four band metal show in Medford tonight. RattleheaD (SoCal) and Deathblow (SLC) are the bands travelling through.

RattleheaD has had this show listed as August 4, but I understand they will be playing August 3, not August 4, at Musichead. Things will get started about 6 p.m.

Tori Amos @ Britt Festivals 2014

Some people are surprised when I tell them I am a Tori Amos fan. They think she doesn’t fit in with my usual musical tastes I suppose, but if they gave her a chance they’d find that her irreverent and edgy lyrics may actually be interesting to them as well.

On top of her lyrics, she has Led Zeppelin playing before, between, and after the show for the audience. Not your typical “pop” artist. Nor do most of my metalhead buddies probably realize that she has covered Slayer’s “Raining Blood.”

I’ve wanted to see her live performance for almost 20 years now, but she has never played in Southern Oregon… until this past Saturday night.

Tori Amos setlist 7/19/14 (Jacksonville, Oregon)

Her show was amazing. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take photos after the first two songs so I don’t have any of the lighting that took effect beginning with about the fifth song. Nor do I have any of her playing under the starry sky that came out near the end of her set. Maybe she’ll come back and let me shoot the last two songs next time. 😉

New Britt Performance Garden @ Britt Festivals

Saturday night was my first time to Britt in 2014. Several improvements have been made including the new Britt Performance Garden for the first act of the evening. This new stage is beautiful, and it is in a shady location when the rest of the hill is in bright, hot, sunlight.
