Break in the clouds on a foggy winter morning in Ashland

Nothing but heat and sun these days in Ashland so today’s photo is from the archives, January of 2011 to be exact.

Ashland in the fog

I took today’s photo more for the hundreds of birds that were streaking across the sky than for the fog, but the photo didn’t look like it featured birds. Instead, it looked like I had small specs of dirt all over my lens so I photoshopped the specs out and left only the bird on the top of the tree in the bottom portion of the photo, two trees left of center.

December is upon us so these colors no longer exist, but in early November this is what things looked like from my window.

Late night foggy glow

Fog in Ashland isn’t rare this time of year. It rolls in; it rolls out. The fog can be pretty, especially when we are perched above it. At night the fog normally can’t be seen even when it is there and we are above it, but for some, unknown reason a couple weeks ago, the fog was glowing. There was no full moon or moon at all. I still don’t know the cause.

We had some wonderful weather while in San Francisco for three nights this past weekend. Highs were in the low 70s and the lows were higher than Ashland’s normal high temperatures for this time of year. There was lots of sun and very little wind too. Saturday night the fog did roll in though. I headed out to the Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District, which wasn’t far from our hotel on Lombard Street, to take this photo on that evening. As I mentioned on my other blog, I picked up a new Nikon D600 last week. After a few test shots to see if there was any dust or oil on the sensor direct from the factory (there wasn’t), this was my very first pic with my new camera body. It was a foggy morning on the SOU campus when I took this picture.

hoarfrost christmas trees fog freeze

Christmas Trees at U-Cut Christmas Tree Farm on the border of Phoenix and Medford, Oregon covered in hoarfrost

We cut down our Christmas tree this past Sunday. The temperature was 28 degrees in the early afternoon and the fog was rather thick. The trees were covered in fog freeze. Even after driving home to Ashland and letting the tree sit out in the sun for the rest of the day the tree was still covered in hoarfrost. We finally brought it in before dark and stood the tree up over a bunch of towels in our living room. It sounded like it was raining in our house for the next half hour as the fog freeze finally melted.
