Spring Break Self Portrait

spring break southern oregon univeristy shadow self portrait grizzly peak ashland

No students on campus this past week since it was Spring Break. The only sign of life at SOU was my shadow.

RAW vs. JPG (RAW isn’t just for weird, indoor lighting)

raw versus vs. jpg landscape clouds contrast

I previously mentioned how I was getting better results working with RAW files in concert lighting situations. When going through my jpg image results I almost deleted the above image because the amazing clouds my eyes saw were totally ruined in the jpg file. Before hitting delete, however, I decided to see what I could do with the RAW file. Here is the result:

The more typical photo of the Ashland Springs Hotel is from E Main Street. The view from the rear, with Grizzly Peak in the distance, isn’t bad either.

Churchill Hall before renovation

Today’s photo is from the archives–March 2009 to be more exact. Currently, Churchill Hall on the SOU campus is under construction so there are fences and things making this view less pleasing. While the construction is mostly for the interior, one thing will change when things are completed. All those ancient swamp coolers in the windows of the above picture will certainly be gone.

David Grubbs memorial

Less than three weeks ago, Ashland experienced a shock that still weighs heavy on the minds of all the citizens. David Michael Grubbs was murdered for no apparent reason. His killer remains at large.

David Grubbs memorial on Ashland Bike Path

I visited the site of the crime yesterday morning for the first time since the murder happened. When the temperature is above 50 degrees I ride the Ashland Bike Path three times a week, but I haven’t done so, due to the cold, since late October. I expected the murder to have taken place in a more hidden and remote section of the path. Actually, the location is right next to the parking lot behind the tennis courts. The murderer could have jumped in their car immediately after the act.

A memorial has been created on the spot of his death. People have dropped off photos, cards, and other artifacts from his life. Others have written things on the bike path itself. I didn’t know David, personally, but I shop frequently where he worked (Ashland’s Shop’n Kart) so I recognized him immediately when I saw his photo on the news. I’m sure he helped me several times at the store over the years.

May justice and karma be served (and soon).

Grizzly Peak Sunset

Sunset from Grizzly Peak looking north (East Medford and beyond)

Another photo today from my recent dusk hike on Grizzly Peak…

With the sun low in the sky the flowers, and even the ground, really lit up into some amazing colors.

Hiking Grizzly Peak at dusk

Last night we went for a little hike on Grizzly Peak and timed it so that we’d get to the side facing Ashland about the time the sun went down. The views were even better than I had imagined, and the way back down in the dark (we had flashlights and headlamps) wasn’t bad either.

The stars from the Grizzly Peak Trail parking lot were amazing too. The Milky Way was clearly visible, and it wasn’t cold.

Regenerating, burned trees on Ashland's Grizzly Peak

Today’s photo is more than a couple years old. I’m excited to head back up Grizzly Peak soon to see how the trees are doing now that additional time has passed since the East Antelope Fire of 2003.

Math professors...

This was the first year that professors formed a gauntlet since commencement moved from Lithia Park in 2003. I thought we should have done the tunnel like at kids' soccer games, but Dennis opted for low fives instead.

I think this is the first year that students (half of them anyway) marched in in front of the grand stands.

I couldn't see the stage so I got to watch the new grads watch the speaker.

Bill Rauch, of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, was the main speaker at 2011 Commencement. He must have said something funny at this point.

This graduate grabbed a photo of the crowd just before her name was read.

After an hour or so of names being read, I amused myself with photos of graduation cap decoration ideas.

At long last, SOU's School of Business students approach the stage.

photoshop mistake

Funny story... Actually, look at this photo long and hard to see if you can see what is "funny" about it first.

Did you see it?

Someone's camera got in the way of the guy's hands on the far right. When I tried to remove the camera from the photo in Photoshop, Photoshop was "smart" enough to realize that hands were missing so it substituted the other guy's hands in the far right guy's "hand place" too. I would have just undone it and left it with the camera blocking the lower right portion of the photo, but I thought this looked too funny to not keep.
