Ashland, Oregon panorama

Last week the mountains around Ashland were dusted with snow. Some funky clouds rolled in, and then some blue sky poked through. I decided to head up to the roof to see how much of the detail I could capture.

I had my Nikkor 70-300mm lens on my Nikon D600. At 70mm I turned the camera vertical, and took a series of 8 photos at 1/800, f/10, ISO-200. I then photomerged them together for the above result. If you have a big screen, click on the image once or twice for the larger view. You can see lots of detail and landmarks on the biggest version including (from the left) Mountain Meadows, Grizzly Peak, and Pompadour Bluff.

It’s not everyday that you get the chance to stand on the roof of a two-story, Victorian Italianate house built in 1883 near downtown Ashland. When that opportunity affords itself on a day (near the end of autumn) when half the town is getting rained on and the other half is under a bright blue sky you count yourself lucky. Today’s photo is about a 300 degree panorama I photomerged together. For loads more details click on the above image. Depending on your browser you may want to click on it again for even more detail. See if you can find the Ashland Springs Hotel, Wagner Butte, the Historic Ashland Armory, and Grizzly Peak. If you look really closely you can also see Puck’s Donuts, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Modern Barber Shop, and the Ashland Wine Cellar.

Took a little trip to Jacksonville this past Sunday and forgot my camera. The skies were amazing and downtown Jacksonville was deserted so it would have been fantastic for photography. Alas, by the time we returned home to Ashland the sun had set and the only hope of capturing the glory of the skies on that day was to leave the shutter open for longer than I can hold a camera still. So I headed up onto the roof and set my camera on the top of my chimney for four seconds to achieve this result.

Grizzly Peak is a bit obscured by the tree just to the left of center. I have another photo from a different vantage point on this evening of Grizzly Peak that I’ll post at a later date.

We visited Paschal Winery & Vineyard for the first time this past weekend. Paschal isn’t far from Ashland, just a few minutes up the road in Talent. I took today’s panorama from the deck. Just to the left of center is a different angle on Grizzly Peak than I’m used to from Ashland. On the right side of the photo is Wagner Butte. Mt. Ashland can’t be seen from this location. If you look really closely you may be able to spot the moon and a baby.

Perhaps you are getting bored of viewing photos of SOU’s Women’s Rugby Team playing in prom dresses? I have more, many more photos I could show you in fact. But this will do it for Prom Dress Rugby week. Tomorrow we will resume with some different pics. As for me, I will be taking a train from New York to Boston tomorrow. Ellie has started conditioning for AHS volleyball next school year. The workouts are early morning. While waiting for her to come out I wandered over to the nearby football field as the sun was just coming up. I couldn’t fit everything into the photo even with my ultra-wide angle lens so this is a photomerge of two wide-angle photos.
