Christiania update

My prior posts on Christiania are some of the most frequently visited on the blog. I’m not sure why. In any event, it took me a while to revisit Christiania. I didn’t end up going until my last week in Copenhagen, three years after my first encounter with the place.

The guidebooks all say go visit Christiania, but nearly everyone that does check out Christiania (as a tourist not looking for pot) is disappointed. The place is pretty ugly and a bit scary when you enter through the main entrance. However, if you keep going there are some interesting and even beautiful things to see.

I was a bit familiar with Portishead before seeing them at the Roskilde Festival. I knew about seven or eight of their songs but had no idea what they looked like. I was pleasantly surprised by their performance.
About 30 minutes before taking the above photo (after Mastodon) I had a Spinal Tap moment, got a bit lost, and actually ended up under the Orange Stage you see pictured. The Orange Stage at Roskilde is a beautiful thing. I had no idea I would end up under, on, and behind it when the day began. It was a good day.

Portishead makes a rare live performance at Roskilde Festival
Portishead is not a band that is easy to see live as they don’t perform often. This fall, however, they are going to play in about a dozen venues in North America. These will be their first concerts in this part (I’m back in the USA as I write this) of the world in the past 13 years.

My second trip to an FCK soccer game was even better than the first. This time we sat in a more serious and crowded part of the stadium.
The weather was really poor, but it wasn’t wet, windy, or cold once we got inside Parken in Copenhagen. It was wet, windy, and cold on the outside of the stadium, and it took us nearly an hour to get in with all of the security. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such a full pat-down before.
When we went to purchase tickets, we were asked if we wanted to sit with the regulars or the “crazy people.” Of course, we went for the crazy people. So when the match began and our section sat there drinking their beers and smoking their pot it seemed like the section of regulars were far more crazy. We commented to each other on this and the guy in front of us must have heard. After the first half, he stood up and told us that the second half would be a whole different story. He then left, never to return.

Sortedams Sø (Black Pond Lake) at night can give you a hint as to how the lake got its name. During the day, there is nothing black about it.

Strøget
Strøget (pronounced similar to stroll) is a carfree, shopping street in Copenhagen, Denmark–the longest such street in all of Europe. At a few certain points, like the one pictured here near the north end of the street, Strøget can be very picturesque. Personally, I find the place to be too crowded while the shops are open. I like to stroll along Strøget in the evening. I’ll have some more photos of Strøget after dark posted here soon.
