From the 17th floor of the Kitatopia building in Oji I noticed this rather strange sight. If you look closely you’ll see that there are two, totally different trains connected. I think the one in the rear is a shinkansen. They weren’t parked either. They were moving right on through. I don’t think I ever saw this in Japan before.
The park in the upper right portion of this photo is called Asukayama Park, a great place to visit if you are in Tokyo with kids.
Japan’s ubiquitous jidohanbaiki (自動販売機) cannot be missed. Today’s photo is not from a vending machine factory or even an amusement park. This was just an ordinary street in Kamakura.
Mori Tower Sky Aquarium
I don’t think the Mori Tower Sky Aquarium is on the 52nd floor of this tallest of high rises in Roppongi any longer. However, a few years ago you could take photos like this in which a 1-inch tall seahorse could look much larger than the Tokyo skyscrapers in the background.
Ogimachi from the Shiroyama Viewpoint (城山展望台から荻町集落)
Ogimachi in Shirakawago is most famous for its look in winter. But in just one month the rice paddies will be long, green, and beautiful. Another good thing about visiting in July is, due to the high altitude, Shirakawago can be cooler than the rest of a hot and humid summer in Japan. For best results, make a reservation to stay at a gasshozukuri weeks in advance and plan your stay for a weeknight as it can get crowded on the weekends.
Yanaka 谷中
I love nearly everything about Yanaka. It is perhaps my favorite part of Tokyo. One thing I could do without, though, is the ridiculous number of power lines overhead.
