Shrinking areas of Japanese shrines

The acreage under many of Japan’s Shinto shrines has decreased over the years. The torii gate in today’s photo welcomes you to Kushida Jinja, yet you have to walk a while to get from this gate to the modern shrine grounds these days. Does the shrine still own all of the land between its historic perimeter and its current location? I don’t know.

Kushida Shrine Ema

Even though this ema says it is from the Meotoebisu Jinja (夫婦恵比須神社), I’m pretty sure it was hanging at Kushida Jinja. Maybe the one is a sub-shrine of the other? This ema is sure to provide the wisher with some big fish satisfaction in their business (or at least that’s the literal meaning of some of what is written thereon).

You don’t have to go to Kyoto to see a tunnel of torii gates. They are quite common at inari shrines like this one in Fukuoka.
