Vikram Gandhi of “Kumare” movie fame on The Colbert Report

stephen colbert report kumare movie

Tonight on “The Colbert Report” Mike Tyson was supposed to be the guest, but he bailed. In his place Stephen Colbert interviewed Vikram Gandhi who is the director and star of Kumaré, a movie about a fake religious guru done in sort of a Borat style. We happened to see this movie while in New York last month, at the IFC Center near Washington Square. After the movie, Vikram, a couple of the producers, and one of Kumare’s followers in the movie (the overweight, single mom) came out and fielded questions from the audience.

Unfortunately, you can’t see this movie at most movie theaters yet. Nor is it available on DVD. I really liked much of it even if some critics have not been so kind.

Rockefeller Center after dark in the rain

After the lightning storm in New York we ate dinner in Brooklyn with plans to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge back into Manhattan. However, the rain started again so the rest of the family called it a day and went back to the place we were staying in Spanish Harlem. I parted with them near the Rockefeller Center. I wanted to go up to the Top of the Rock for a view of New York in the rain at night, but it was closed due to the continued threat of lightning. Instead, I took a walk to Times Square. At the beginning of that walk I captured this image of part of the Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall reflecting in the fountain across the street on the corner of 6th Avenue and 49th Street.

Lightning striking New York City

Shortly after taking this photo that I posted a couple days ago, lightning started flashing all over the New York skyline. We were walking to the nearest subway station along the edge of Morningside Park when I captured this image of one of those lightning strikes.

On the north side of the Columbia University campus there is a nice view of W 120th Street from this perch. I photomerged a half dozen photos, taken just before a summer lightning storm, to come up with the above image.

On the far left is The Riverside Church. Moving right from there is Union Theological Seminary, then Teacher’s College directly across the street, and to the right is Whittier Hall.

The New York Yankees had the best record in Major League Baseball for the first half of the season. Can they do it again in the second half?

Ippudo NY

赤丸新味 @ 一風堂ラーメン

The second closest place to our residence in Japan a couple years ago (if we wanted to eat ramen) was Ippudo. We had many red and white bowls during that year.

So when we were in New York a few weeks ago we had to try the American version of this chain. The menu was very different, but they still had the red bowl which tasted very similar.
