Omar Vizquel

I meant to post something about Omar Vizquel near the end of the 2012 baseball season, just before he retired, but I forgot that I had watched him play twice (once in Oakland and once in Boston) last year until this photo came up as my random, desktop image of the day.

Omar is actually older than me. With his retirement I became older than every active MLB player which makes me feel very old. As a kid I remember thinking how old the players all were. Now they all seem so young. What happened?

Vizquel had some great years between 1992 and 2006, winning 11 Gold Gloves during that stretch. He finished his career with nearly 3,000 hits and over 400 stolen bases.

Today’s photo was taken at Boston’s Fenway Park during its 100-year anniversary year.

Miguel Cabrera - 2012 Triple Crown

Miguel Cabrera led the American League in batting average, home runs, and RBIs this season. No one had done so since 1967. He will likely win the MVP award as well. I am hoping the A’s pitchers can hold him in check for another couple days.

With Oakland‘s come-from-behind victory today their odds of making the playoffs increase to 92%. Donaldson, with his 9th inning game-tying homer, and Moss, with his 10th inning game-winning homer will get all of the glory, but let’s not forget the A’s bullpen which gave up just 2 hits and no runs over nearly 6 innings. Today I tip my cap to Ryan Cook, pictured above, one of many no-name rookies or cast offs who make up this amazing team.

Why superman? See my prior post, and here is a video of him dislocating his shoulder and then popping it back into place.

Did he get taken out of the game and go on the DL? No, instead Inge put his shoulder back in place all by himself. Then he took a few practice throws and the game continued. Finally, in the top of the 8th inning, with men on first and third, two outs, and the score tied 7-7, Inge delivered what would become the game-winning hit.

On my way home from my road trip to see Iron Maiden I took in my third A’s game of the year. Three games in one year are the most A’s games I’ve attended in a single season since the early 1980s (when I used to go to dozens a year). In fact, I don’t think I saw three A’s games in person in total after 1986 and before 2012.
