Happy birthday, Albert Pujols!

Albert Pujols (April 2012)

Today’s photo comes from one of the first games Pujols played for the Angels. The Cardinals really got the best of Albert. The Angels were fools for thinking he would be as good for them. He only played one more season for the Cardinals as he did the Angels, but he hit more than twice as many home runs for the Cardinals. His on-base percentage was 109 points higher for the Cardinals! His average WAR with the Cardinals was 7 and it was only 1 for the Angels. The Cardinals paid him just over $100M and the Angels? $240M. Ouch! Sometimes you don’t get what you pay for.

A hot and home runny kind of day

David Ross (catching), Russell Martin (hitting), and Gerry Davis (umpiring)

Russell Martin was one of the few who did not hit a home run at this game, which set a record for total home runs by both teams at the new Yankee Stadium. David Ross hit one, and Martin was calling the pitches when the Braves hit five home runs.

Happy birthday, Miguel Batista!

Miguel Batista pitching for the New York Mets in 2012

On the night I took this photo (6/24/12), Batista took the loss after giving up a score-tying home run to Robinson Cano in the 8th inning. The Mets released him a month later.

@NickSwisher

An average player can steal a base 2/3 of the time. A good base runner can do so 3/4 of the time. Nick Swisher did it less than 1/2 the time. And this concludes today’s math lesson.

Major League Baseball appears to be happening in 2020 after all. The shortened season, due to the coronavirus pandemic, will result in a maximum 60-game format. The A’s will report to Oakland for a summer version of Spring Training that is expected to take place at the Oakland Coliseum beginning on July 1. Opening Day will likely be on July 23 or 24. The A’s schedule will be limited solely to teams in the AL West (Angels, Astros, Mariners, and Rangers) and National League West (D-backs, Dodgers, Giants, Padres, and Rockies) for the regular season. The expectation is that the A’s will play 40 games against divisional opponents and 20 games against NL West teams. All games will feature a designated hitter, as MLB is instituting a universal DH as part of the health and safety protocols being put in place for the 2020 season. I’m pretty sure fans will not be allowed at any of the games, even in a socially-distanced fashion.
