1 yen coins jammed into rock overhangs on Shosenkyo hike
I was surprised to not see more hikers on my way up Shosenkyo (昇仙峡). Maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised given that it was a weekday and also the hottest day of the year (reaching more than 40 degrees Celsius). The top was fairly crowded though as most people drive to near the top or take a bus there. I took a bus to the bottom and walked my way up and down. The scenery was amazing. Along the way rocks created ceilings for part of trail and people had given up their coins to the cracks in the rocks.

Godzilla on Shosenkyo
While standing at the feet of Eric Bloom and Buck Dharma last night I recalled seeing Godzilla just last month. Sure enough, a quick look through some of my photos from my visit to Shosenkyo and I found today’s image. By the way, Tokyo is a two-syllable word (some would say four, but it certainly isn’t three).
Summer in Japan
kakigori (かき氷) on the table and Summer Koshien (夏の甲子園) on the TV
Two things can get you through Japan’s hot and humid August–the annual high school baseball tournament and shaved ice. I enjoyed both at the top of the Shosenkyo Ropeway near Kofu.
