Food (and flower) shop in Nishiwaseda
The sign above this ancient business says the business is called Matsuya and the product is food. I walked past this place hundreds of times in Tokyo and never once saw a customer. Occasionally I saw an old person inside, sleeping in a chair waiting for a customer. I wondered how long this store had been there. 40 years? 60 years? Could it have actually survived the war? Probably not. My best guess is that it went up shortly after the war but probably was rebuilt to look just like the pre-war store.
食料品店 means the store sells food; however, the only food-like items are in the vending machines outside the store. All I ever saw were flowers and plants–and not really nice, fresh ones like the other flower stores in Tokyo. These flowers always had an old and about-to-die look, sort of like the rest of the place.
Fancy brothel in Tokyo’s Yoshiwara
In Taito-Ku in Tokyo there remains a pleasure quarter where sex for money isn’t legal, but paying someone to give you a bath for a certain amount of time is. If sex happens during your soaping activities then it is considered consensual and legal. Soaplands (as they are called) aren’t the only such businesses in the area, but it is hard to miss them should you stroll through this part of town (dubbed “Yoshiwara” after the old red light district in Tokyo which no longer exists). When the buildings feature the type of exterior shown in today’s photo they are really, really hard to miss even if you have no idea what is going on inside.
Tokyo Metropolis
Today’s photo looks to the southwest of central Tokyo from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office (東京都庁舎) in Shinjuku. The other tower of this building can be seen on the far left.
Train Connections
From the 17th floor of the Kitatopia building in Oji I noticed this rather strange sight. If you look closely you’ll see that there are two, totally different trains connected. I think the one in the rear is a shinkansen. They weren’t parked either. They were moving right on through. I don’t think I ever saw this in Japan before.
The park in the upper right portion of this photo is called Asukayama Park, a great place to visit if you are in Tokyo with kids.
