Ghost at Getaway Rock Festival

Did you know that Ghost will be touring the US and Canada beginning next month? It’s true. Perhaps you can see them in person. The best part is that you won’t just get Ghost’s short set (they only have one CD). They are opening for my current favorite band, Enslaved. The two bands couldn’t be much more different so it will be interesting to see what people coming for Enslaved think of Ghost and what those coming for Ghost think of Enslaved.

I would love to see Ghost and Enslaved again, but considering I’ve seen them both twice now, and they aren’t playing anywhere near my location, I will not be making the road trip for these two bands this time around.

Here is a video I took of Ghost covering The Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun”. Sorry for the poor audio on the bass. I was using auto sensitivity on my camera‘s audio, and I later learned that low sensitivity, instead of auto, works much better for loud concerts.

Ghost at GRF 2011

There was a lot of buzz in the air at the Getaway Rock Festival in Gavle, Sweden about Ghost. Ghost is from Sweden, but since they are a new band, most of the Swedish people (but not me) had yet to experience them live. Beyond the fans, the other bands wanted to check them out as well. I saw most of the members of Death Angel go in (very excitedly I might add) to see Ghost. Corrosion of Conformity mentioned during their set that they were eager to see Ghost as well.

But I’m getting ahead of my story a bit… Let’s back up.

My GRF schedule, that I had printed out a week or so before the festival, indicated that Ghost was playing on the second day of the festival. On the first day, after Death Angel and Corrosion of Conformity, there was nothing of interest to me until Alice Cooper late at night. So I found my hotel and decided to take a long nap since I had so little sleep the night before. I couldn’t sleep too long (as my room was near the front door of the hotel and I could hear it open every time someone came in or went out) and after a while I decided to head back to the festival.

A huge line was forming for the indoor stage, the longest for any band of the entire festival it turns out.

I decided I should get a new schedule in case anything had changed from my print out. Sure enough, Ghost had been bumped from July 8 to July 7 and had been given an earlier time slot. This line was for Ghost. Yikes, had I slept longer I would have missed them. I got in line to enter, but the place filled up, and it appeared that I wasn’t going to get in (along with many others).

Then I noticed someone else with a photo pass flash it to the door guard and in they went. I used my fast pass (photo pass) to do the same and in I went too. Yeah baby!

Ghost performed the exact same set as they did at the Roskilde Festival to a very appreciative crowd. Unfortunately, many people that wanted to see them could not get in. They are turning into quite the viral band with these kinds of things happening to them.

F.C. København scores a goal against Odense

My second trip to an FCK soccer game was even better than the first. This time we sat in a more serious and crowded part of the stadium.

The weather was really poor, but it wasn’t wet, windy, or cold once we got inside Parken in Copenhagen. It was wet, windy, and cold on the outside of the stadium, and it took us nearly an hour to get in with all of the security. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such a full pat-down before.

When we went to purchase tickets, we were asked if we wanted to sit with the regulars or the “crazy people.” Of course, we went for the crazy people. So when the match began and our section sat there drinking their beers and smoking their pot it seemed like the section of regulars were far more crazy. We commented to each other on this and the guy in front of us must have heard. After the first half, he stood up and told us that the second half would be a whole different story. He then left, never to return.

I still haven’t had time to process many images from the Amon Amarth show, but here are a couple more and a couple more videos too. I hope to have a large set of photos and videos from the Wonder Ballroom concert posted later today.

The next video is “With Oden On Our Side” from the 2006 CD of the same name. The last time I saw Amon Amarth was when they were touring for that CD.

A new song, “A Beast Am I” off of “Surtur Rising,” is next. If you have a large screen you can view these in HD at 720p or 1080p. I took the photos and video with my TZ10 (ZS7). Now that the show is over I wish I had used my new Nikon, but that wouldn’t have been fun to have had around my neck all evening.

I just got back from a road trip to Portland to see Amon Amarth perform a double-set concert (“An Evening With Amon Amarth” Tour) with no opening band at the Wonder Ballroom. The first set was their new CD in its entirety. The second set was a more typical mixture of Amon Amarth classics. The full setlist (set list?) for the 2.5 hour show looked like this:
