I took today’s photo (yesterday) from the Ashland Springs Hotel. The clouds made for some spectacular scenery and shadows. Grizzly Peak looks best this time of year as it isn’t normally this green.
Yesterday we had beautiful weather so I headed out to the SOU softball field to check out a game and test out my new camera. Several years ago I took pictures at an SOU softball game and there were no problems in terms of field access (not that you could go on the field or anything like that, but you could go down, 10 feet or so off the foul lines, behind a fence you could take photos over). Things have changed since then; now you can’t get close to the field, and you have to shoot through fencing. Needless to say, you can’t get very good shots with those restrictions in place. My Nikon D7000 was able to focus on the players through the fence, but the images through metal wires are never going to be spectacular. I hope they make things more photographer friendly again.
We get lots of foggy sunrises in the winter and spring seasons. This one is from yesterday. There probably won’t be many more in the next 8 months. I like ’em, in part, because no two are the same.
Ashland can’t hold a candle to Japan when it comes to cherry blossoms, but we do have our fair share of blossoming trees anyway. They have begun to open in the past few days but are yet to peak. Hopefully, we’ll have weather like today’s for a week or two from here on out to fully enjoy them.
I’m a morning person. So even though no one else was close to being up on our only morning in Brookings last week, I went out for a walk on the beach. According to the tide tables, this was to be the lowest tide of the month. Compared to the day before at high tide (in which we couldn’t even make it to the beach due to the high water level), this was a completely different scene. There was more beach than I could imagine. The last 100 feet or so of beach consisted of sand that didn’t appear to ever get dry. Even though the Pacific Ocean was still a ways out there, my shoes (and not just the bottoms) got wet in this super low-tide stuff. The sand was so wet, still, that it reflected the sky and made for a nice picture. I’m not sure if I like the dog running into the corner of the picture or not.

This last song really surprised me. I didn’t realize Rob was doing covers of “The Final Cut” or I wouldn’t have missed the first part of it. I’m a huge Roger Waters fan and “The Final Cut” is more Roger Waters than Pink Floyd.
I didn’t know Ashland had a dog bar until a couple days ago. I just purchased a new camera which I went out to test. As I was looking for subject matter to photograph in front of the Ashland Springs Hotel (Lark’s actually) I spotted this dog bar. I have probably walked past this spot a hundred times or more and never noticed the dog bar. That’s one thing I like about photography. It forces you to see more.
Here is a wider shot so you can see why I may not have previously discovered it. I bent down to try it out and, sure enough, it works. I didn’t drink out of it, of course, but the button in the leaf does produce a flow of water.
BTW, these are the first D7000 photos (of many to come) on Ashland Daily Photo. As you can tell from the second photo, I’m still getting used to my new Nikon. I messed the shot up by focusing on the leaves of the plant instead of focusing on the dog bar. I’ll get better.
Pete, Floater’s drummer, opened up for Rob. Imagine if you will back to the late 1970s when the members of Kiss all made their solo albums. I’m not a Kiss fan so I don’t know anything about those records but I’m guessing all of the band members did not move to the guitar on them. I’m guessing Gene still played the bass, Peter played drums, etc. Maybe I’m wrong. The members of Floater, on the other hand, all play guitar on their solo albums. Pete opened for Rob playing nothing but guitar. Rob, who is Floater’s bassist, played only guitar as well. Maybe this only strikes me as interesting.
Anyway, Pete’s CD goes by the name Riverboat I believe. I couldn’t find it on amazon.
I’ll leave you with another song from Rob’s set (with Pete on drums). This is a song called “Come to Me” off Rob’s new CD. He tells a little story about it before playing.

Last night a friend and I headed to Medford to watch Rob Wynia on his solo, acoustic tour in support of his new CD, Iron by Water. The Floater front man did not disappoint. Actually, 2/3 of Floater played on this evening. Peter Cornett was on drums.
