Winter is supposed to come after Fall, but the snow gods and my Japanese Maple didn’t get the memo this year. We normally only get a snow or two that sticks per winter. Usually that doesn’t happen until January or February at the earliest. Last week we received several inches of the white stuff. As soon as the snow finished falling, the maple decided it was time to drop all of its red and mostly orange leaves creating this scene, one we haven’t witnessed before.

The line was long (about 30 people), but there is plenty to look at while you wait, just like the Portland stores. We drove by later in the day, on our way to a friend’s house, while the Duck’s were playing football against Arizona nearby. I looked in and only two people were in line. So if you want to avoid the line, go in during a Duck’s game. 😉
I have been in Eugene, Oregon the past couple days for the Thanksgiving holiday. Voodoo Doughnut, of Portland, Oregon, now has a shop in Eugene too. We headed there for breakfast the day after Thanksgiving only to find them closed until noon. So we came back after lunch for dessert.
After several days in a row of little or no sun last week, it was nice to look out the window one afternoon and see some blue sky breaking through some white, fluffy clouds. With the Japanese Maples still pretending it is fall and the pines remaining as green as ever, this presented the viewer with a cornucopia of color. There was even snow on the mountains to offset the colors with some whiteness.
There was no school today, not because it snowed but because the campus is closed this week for Thanksgiving. I went in anyway. Nobody was there. No footprints in the snow on a college campus is an unusual sight. So peaceful…

The 2010 Southern Oregon University Women’s Volleyball team continued their dominance this past Saturday night, defeating Holy Names University at home in Ashland in straight sets to open the first round of the NAIA Volleyball National Championship. Next they go to Iowa to take the next steps in order to go all the way this year.

A rare glimpse of the sun yesterday allowed this photo. It may look like an HDR, but it is not. The light was just right, and our Japanese maple is just a few days away from giving up its leaves for the winter (which feels like it is already here).
Volleyball at the local YMCA this morning…
Ten years ago we moved to Ashland from San Jose, California. Things haven’t changed much in Ashland during those ten years. When we got here in 2000, it was freezing, one of our Japanese Maples was in full fall splendor, and the other had lost all of its leaves. That’s the same condition as things today.
Today’s photo was taken a couple weeks ago. Going from the left, about 30% into the photo is Pilot Rock. About 75% into the photo from the left is Mt. Ashland.
