Change in location, change in weather

One of the reasons for showing you so many pictures of Seattle the past week or two is that there hasn’t been much to photograph in Ashland of late. December and January offer the least attractive glimpses of this town, with the exception of when it snows and the mountains are powdered but not concealed with clouds and/or fog. Otherwise it is too foggy/cloudy to see much or the hills look brownish and the skies look more gray than blue. Sunrises can still be pretty though. Here is one from last week. A half hour after taking this photograph our house was surrounded by fog and we couldn’t see a thing.

Mount Rainier

rainier mount

It’s time for another road trip. I’ve spent the last couple of days in Seattle. You’ll get a week, or more, of it here. I hope you don’t mind.

Today’s photo is from the plane flying into Seattle. This is the sunrise behind Mount Rainier. I apologize for the lack of clarity but there isn’t much you can do behind those thick, dirty airplane windows.

Here is a somewhat cleaned up version thanks to Paint Shop Photo Pro. You probably can’t see much difference unless you look at the larger versions by clicking on them.

Lake of the Woods

I know it’s only January, but I can still dream, right? Today’s photograph is from the 3rd of July 2007. The kids are playing in Lake of the Woods, a little over a half hour east of Ashland. In the background is Mt. McLaughlin.

Nevada Winter Scene

Continuing our trip home from Utah to Oregon, I took the above picture through a rather dirty window somewhere between Winnemucca and Reno, Nevada while going about 75 MPH. If you click on it to view it larger, you may even be able to see a living creature in the lower left corner.

Final Utah Winter Scene!

If you are sick of my pictures of Utah you are in luck as tomorrow we will be moving out of Utah and getting on the road back to Ashland. Today’s photo includes my father-in-law and nephew.

Mt. Ashland Ski Lodge

I’m still out of town so I’m borrowing another picture from the Ashland Daily Tidings.

pre-sunrise

This is a sight that is very, very rare in Ashland. We get snow a few times a year, but when it snows there are clouds. By the time we get clear skies the snow has disappeared or will melt very rapidly. The night prior to the taking of this picture we got snow and then the clouds moved on. The temperature went below 0 degrees Fahrenheit (about -20 Celsius) so the snow wasn’t going anywhere.

While this may look like a sunrise picture I actually took it well before sunrise. I left the shutter open for 15 seconds. If you click on the photo for a bigger view you can even see some stars. The part of town you can see the lights coming from is near I-5, Exit 14 (14 miles north of the California border).

Now that the leaves are gone from my Japanese Maple the sky must make up the difference in lost color.

West Ashland

Continuing my walk on Ridge Road from an entry 3 or 4 days ago, this is a view across Lithia Park from the east looking west. You can make out pieces of Strawberry Lane (where I took a nasty spill on my bike many years ago before they paved it) and Scenic Drive.

The nice thing about Ridge Road is you can see so many different things from it. Look to the south for nice views of Mt. Ashland and the Siskiyou Mountain Range; to the west you get Lithia Park (if you look down) and this; to the north is downtown, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the Ashland Springs Hotel; and to the east you can see SOU, Grizzly Peak, and much more.

Autumn leaves, fog, and mountains

The leaves have all fallen during the past few days, but a couple weeks ago you could still see the mountains and fog through a rich display of color courtesy of our Japanese Maple.
