Mount McLoughlin (January 1, 2024)

Mount McLoughlin usually has much more snow on it in early January, but less than a week ago it looked like this. Alas, yesterday’s snow storm likely gave it a thick winter blanket.

Willow Lake, Oregon (August 2023)

Willow Lake is just an hour from Ashland, not much farther than Lake of the Woods (which I’ve been to dozens of times over the years). And yet, I’d never heard of it until last week. I bounced the name off of a few friends who have also been in Ashland for over 20 years, and they hadn’t hear of it either. Did I just “out” a somewhat secret lake?

Should you find yourself wanting to visit this place, don’t put “Willow Lake” into Google Maps or you may get sent down the wrong road. Instead, use “Willow Lake County Park”.

Mount McLoughlin from Upper Table Rock Trail (January 9, 2022)

January was the warmest in Southern Oregon history. On this day, we were in t-shirts on top of table rock, and it wasn’t even cold.

The dome in the lower-right is a 4.6 million-gallon water reservoir in Eagle Point.

Ice Walker

Walk on Water

Last week I posted a photo from the edge of Lake of the Woods. This was from a walk I took last weekend in snow shoes.

Today’s photo is from the middle of the lake after I ventured out past the shadows. In the shadows there was snow on the ice, and things felt more solid. I probably could have kept going straight across to my car near the lodge in the distance, but as the ice became more transparent I figured my adrenaline levels were high enough so I turned back at this point and walked around instead.
