Dogwood Blossoms on SOU campus

Southern Oregon University Dogwood blossoms

Like all of the other flowering plants and trees this year, the dogwoods in front of Central Hall blossomed early. Today’s photo is from late April, and the dogwoods don’t normally look like this until May 10 or so. They are long gone now.

The color of the trees when they first get their leaves in late April is somehow different than the color of the leaves in mid-summer.

Thursday night is the annual International Show in the Music Recital Hall on campus. Admission is free and doors open at 6. In some years the line has been so long that people who didn’t arrive before the doors opened were turned away due to lack of available seating so get there early. The show starts at 6:30.

After getting 10-run ruled in the first game of their doubleheader against Eagle Point yesterday, the Ashland High School girls softball team came back from a 12-2 deficit in the second game to pull off a stunning, 15-14 victory.

Most of my photomerges are in the three-to-five photo range. Sometimes they are just two photos. However, I like to try new things. So at last Saturday’s SOU softball game I set my D600 to “Ch” for continuous high speed shooting. The sky was overcast so I went with 1/4000, f/8, ISO-2000. If it was sunnier I would have went with something like 1/4000, f/11, ISO-800. Next time if it is overcast I think I will try something more along the lines of 1/1000, f/10, ISO-1600.

Anyway, I then focused on the batter at 70mm from behind first base. When she connected I immediately began firing as I turned my camera toward right field. Twenty eight photos (and about four seconds) later I was done shooting. The photomerged result can be seen above. After the photomerge my file size was almost 3 GB for what had become a single photo! I resized it and did a bit of editing to get it down to about the 1 MB image I uploaded. Click on the photo for the more detailed 1 MB version and to have it fill your screen.

One of my reasons for shooting yesterday’s softball game was to see if I could get away with taking only my Nikon 70-300mm VR to Japan and Korea this summer where I plan to attend several professional baseball games. My other option is to take my 70-200mm f/2.8 and a 1.7X teleconverter. The problem is those two combined weigh more than twice as much as my 70-300mm and they take up more space in my luggage.

The 70-300mm passed the test in sunny conditions. Unfortunately, most of the games I will go to in Korea and Japan will probably be at night and/or indoors. I’m still leaning towards the 70-300mm though.
