Brown Bear @ Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon
Today’s photo is from the archives. I took this picture almost a year ago through my rolled-down window in the car on our way back from the coast when we drove through the safari in Winston where I-5 meets the highway to the beach.
Red-breasted sapsucker (Ashland, Oregon – December 2022)
Not the rapper Young Buck, this young fella in my backyard was the real thing.
During my second trip to Hyatt Lake of the summer I saw this red-tailed hawk. In my prior post I labeled the bird as a bald eagle (as that is what I was told), but now I’m thinking it was an osprey.
We had several fawns hang out in our backyard last year, but this is the first one I have seen in 2012.

As mentioned previously, I headed into the Cascades earlier this month to try and find a nest of bald eagles on the edge of Hyatt Lake. I found the nest, but ma and pa were nowhere to be found. There was one juvenile in the nest staring at me stare at him/her. After about an hour of this I was about ready to call it a day as it seemed I would have to wait forever for the white-headed parents to return. Suddenly, the juvenile stirred for the first time and made a little fly around. I captured today’s photo at the beginning of that moment.
Some Oregon Ducks for you today… These ducks aren’t from the University of Oregon in Eugene. No, these ducks were enjoying the day in Lithia Park’s Upper Duck Pond which will be celebrating its 100 year anniversary in just three more years.
Ashland was chosen as one of “The 20 Best Small Towns in America” by Smithsonian. But today’s photo comes not from Ashland but from one of the other 20 Best Small Towns, Laguna Beach. I took this photo of a Great Egret (Great White Heron) this past Sunday when I was exploring Laguna Beach.
This isn’t the first time Ashland has made one of these “Best of” lists. Ashland was previously chosen as one of the “Best Places to Retire” and “Best Places to Live” and “Best Ski Towns” and “Best Places to Thrive” and “Best Town Ever“.
