Let the reindeer games begin…
Time to saddle up the sleigh. If Santa is missing any deer to guide his sleigh tomorrow night, he can find this one in my backyard all ready and rested to go.
Fox in Ashland
Unlike the deer (about 200 of which live in town), we don’t see fox every day in Ashland. Seeing them is one thing, but getting them to hold still long enough for a photo is another.
Jackrabbit
Deer, squirrel, and raccoon are common sights in town. I have also seen bear, fox, turkey, and skunk. This was the first jackrabbit I’ve encountered in Ashland.
Wagner Butte from Highway 99
I took today’s photo on a recent bike ride I took up Highway 99. The location was somewhere between Talent and Phoenix, maybe 8 miles or so from my home in Ashland. Wagner Butte is in the background. I want to climb Wagner Butte before going to Denmark in a couple weeks, but I don’t think the snow will melt before then. This year, due to the low temperatures and high precipitation, the trails up Grizzly and Wagner are opening much later than normal.
Pear Capital of the World?
There is a bit of controversy over where exactly the “Pear Capital of the World” is. Kelseyville, California call themselves the Pear Capital of the World, but they don’t grow nearly as many pears as the Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon. Plus, Harry & David (famous for pears) is located in Medford, not Kelseyville.
I took today’s photo on the last day of April, when the pear blossoms were at their peak, in a field with thousands of pear trees located in Talent or Phoenix (or somewhere in between the two). For some, unknown reason the annual Pear Blossom Parade and Run takes place in early April, before the pear blossoms and usually before decent weather.
There aren’t many pear orchards right in Ashland, but we have a pear tree in our backyard that just finished blossoming. We are now past the cherry blossoms, pear blossoms, and daffodils. Now, in mid-May, we are getting the dogwood blossoms.
Outdoor lawn deer ornament
Some people purchase fake deer decorations to put in their yard for Christmas. In Ashland, you don’t have to pay for such decorations, and the deer are real.
Digging the detail
I’m really enjoying the level of detail my new camera is capturing. If you have a large screen, click on the image for a better view. Even the dew on the grass looks good. This deer was in my backyard when I went out to test a few different camera settings the other morning.
Horses in the snow
We had a bit of snow this morning, not as much as in this picture from a few weeks ago. Notice the semi trucks in the background chaining up on I-5 before heading over the Siskiyou Summit.
Back Home
We were planning on arriving home, after nine days in Utah, last night. Snow had other plans for us. We hit a storm just past Susanville, California and ended up getting a room in Mt. Shasta instead.
This morning we headed out of Mt. Shasta on I-5 going north. We were delayed about an hour by chain requirements at the Siskyou Summit on the California/Oregon border.
When we finally arrived back in Ashland, more than 12 hours later than planned, we found our property hadn’t been deserted after all. A family of deer had taken up residence on our back lawn and have not budged even though several hours have passed.
