Tokyo Sumo
Tokyo’s 両国国技館
I would really like to photograph some sumo this summer. This is especially true now that I have “fast glass” that I know how to use. Alas, I will be in Japan during June and August, two of sumo’s off months so this adventure will have to wait until a future year.
Yoshinoya beef bowl (吉野家の牛丼)
Gyudon (牛丼) is one of my favorite Japanese dishes. Sure it’s cheap Japanese fast food, but I still love it. I tried this bowl in the Los Angeles area as you can’t find Japanese style beef bowls anywhere near my normal neck of the woods in Southern Oregon. It wasn’t quite the same as the many I have consumed in Japan. Maybe it was the styrofoam bowl? Perhaps that was part of it, but something still seemed a bit off in the recipe.
I’m looking forward to consuming the real thing in Japan this summer as well as many bowls of bulgogi (불고기) in Korea.

Yanaka garage
Space is at a premium in Tokyo. Today’s photo features someone’s garage in Yanaka that is just an inch or so too small for the owner’s car to completely squeeze in.
Yakudoshi (厄年) @ Hie Jinja (日枝神社)
Hie Shrine in the middle of Tokyo is one of the stranger Shinto shrines in Japan in my opinion. For one, you can take an escalator to get to it. Another is the contrast between the shrine and the skyscrapers around it. (Notice the 38-story Prudential Tower in the upper left.)
Today’s photo features a curious bit of superstition, not uncommon at Japanese shrines and temples. The sign board in the lower right portion of the pic tells you whether this will be a bad year for you based on the year you were born. Males and females have different unlucky years according to this “yakudoshi.”
Waseda University
Waseda University (早稲田大学) – Tokyo, Japan
Last week Waseda University held its graduation ceremony. I have enjoyed seeing photos from the event on Facebook from some of my former students. I remember the 2010 ceremony very well as I was sitting on the stage but didn’t have to speak, unlike the 2009 opening ceremony which I spoke at and is now just a blur in my head.
