Continuing our October/Halloween related posts, today’s photo (beyond the title) really has nothing to do with October or Halloween as the Japanese do their dancing (盆踊り) to honor their dead ancestors in the middle of summer.

The Central League Climax Series First Stage begins this weekend in Japan. The Swallows are my Central League team, but they had a typical Swallows season and ended up in the basement. My next favorite team in the CL is Hiroshima, in large part because of the wonderful Carp fans I sat next to last summer. They will be matched up with the Tigers in the series.
Fred Lewis, by the way, only lasted one season for the Carp. Although he played in 79 games for Hiroshima last year, he hit just .268 with only 4 home runs.
Sannin Maiko (三人舞妓) statue (Fukuoka, Japan)
This statue of three Maiko is near the Fukuhaku Deai Bridge that connects Hakata and Fukuoka. This is close to were I took this other photo later in the day. The statue is based on the Hakata dolls (博多人形) made by Yoichi Kojima (小島与一), a Hakata dolls craftsman. His work won the silver award at the Paris International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts in 1925.

Marugame udon shops are all over Japan these days. The first one was created fairly recently (21st Century), and now there are more than 500. We ate at one near the Shinokubo Station (新大久保駅) in Tokyo several times when we lived in Japan in 2009 and 2010. Today’s photo comes from one on the road between Kofu and Kai in Yamanashi Prefecture.
The concept for these restaurants combines fast food, with fresh food, and low prices. No wonder they have been so successful. The noodles are made right in front of the customers lining up. Customers choose the toppings, also freshly made on the premises, and pay at the end of the line in sort of a cafeteria style.

The food you can purchase on Japan’s shinkansen (新幹線) is actually pretty good. And instead of having to pick one sandwich, you can purchase a variety pack with four mini sandwiches. The crust has been carefully cut off of each, making you feel like a four-year old again. 😉
Tokyo from Ebisu Garden Place Tower
My favorite place to view Tokyo is Ebisu Garden Place Tower. There are other free locations in Tokyo, but they are frequently crowded, you can’t get right next to the windows, or the glass is so old that the view is no longer very clear. Some of the restaurants on the top two floors of this building aren’t very expensive either.
