I meant to post something about Omar Vizquel near the end of the 2012 baseball season, just before he retired, but I forgot that I had watched him play twice (once in Oakland and once in Boston) last year until this photo came up as my random, desktop image of the day.
Omar is actually older than me. With his retirement I became older than every active MLB player which makes me feel very old. As a kid I remember thinking how old the players all were. Now they all seem so young. What happened?
Vizquel had some great years between 1992 and 2006, winning 11 Gold Gloves during that stretch. He finished his career with nearly 3,000 hits and over 400 stolen bases.

Korean visa arrived
My passport was returned to me in the mail from Seattle yesterday complete with a Korean visa attached. Barring some sort of huge military outbreak, I will be heading off to Korea in just over two months.
Speaking of my passport, with three visas (Korea, Japan, and China) taking up a full page each, and about 30 country stamps, there are only a few spots left for new stamps. It would probably already be full were it not for the fact that most countries I have been to in Europe didn’t stamp my passport.
Speaking of getting a Korean visa, the process was exceedingly quick. The instructions said to include an express mail mailer with postage attached for them to send it back, but I figured I could get away with a priority mailer given that I still have two+ months. I was anticipating a month to six week turnaround. Instead, even with priority (2 or 3 day mail instead of overnight) mail in both directions, I received my visa a mere week after I sent my passport to the Korean Consulate in Seattle. They must have processed everything in just a day or two. Fantastic!
Dominican Republic goes 8-0 to win 2013 WBC

The Dominican Republic defeated Puerto Rico in San Francisco last night to win the 2013 World Baseball Championship. I thought about making a road trip down I-5 to see it, but my schedule wouldn’t allow it.
The pitching staff of the DR dominated, keeping their ERA under 2.00 for the entire series. Dotel, pictured above from a 2012 MLB game I attended, pitched 4.2 scoreless innings when he was in games in relief.
David Wright’s Grand Slam Saves Team USA in WBC

A win today (against Canada) for Team USA in the 2013 World Baseball Classic and they will move on to the next round in Miami. Today’s game may have been meaningless, and they would already be eliminated had they lost to Italy yesterday. However, David Wright hit a grand slam with the score tied, and Team USA held on for the 6-2 victory.
