Crazy Kia Tigers fans

I have spent the past couple nights enjoying Korean Professional Baseball in Gwangju. The KIA Tigers are sort of the Oakland A’s of Korean baseball. They are a small market team, in an old stadium, who find ways to win. In fact, they have won more championships than any other Korean baseball team (ten). The fans are absolutely nuts. Literally, some of them are not quite right in the head. Not being able to speak Korean, I purchased a random ticket which happened to be right in the middle of the craziest of the bunch. Perhaps the ticket lady thought she was punishing me for not speaking or understanding Korean, but I had a blast (even if I did suffer some permanent hearing loss). The guy who sat behind me majored in English so he gave me a good history lesson on the Tigers and also on each of the lunatics before they came up to try to talk to me.

The KIA Tigers get a new stadium next year. You can see it being built behind left field in today’s photo.

This home run by Alex Rodriguez was one of many on the day as the Yankees and Braves tied a Yankee Stadium record for most home runs.

Andrew Moore of the OSU Beavers

Moore gets the start today for Oregon State in the 2013 College World Series. Moore went 13-1 with a 1.22 ERA for the Beavers during his freshman year, leading OSU in wins and ERA. The two-time champion OSU Beavers lost in extra innings yesterday which means they must win today to remain in the College World Series.

Ryon Healy of the Oregon Ducks was taken by the Oakland A’s with the 100th pick

Ryon Healy will have to make only a minor change in his uniform as he transitions from the Ducks’ green and gold to the Athletics’ green and gold. When I took today’s photo three weeks ago, I thought at the time how strange it was to see A’s vs. Giants colors at a Ducks vs. Beavers game. I found myself wanting the Ducks to win simply because they looked more like my A’s. I can’t get too attached to one school or the other until my kids figure out where they want to go. I don’t want to become a Ducks fan if Ryan and/or Ellie end up at OSU or vice versa.

Ryan Barnes hits a home run for the OSU Beavers Baseball Team

Oregon State University finished the first round (Regionals) with a perfect 3-0 record to move into the Sweet Sixteen of this year’s College World Series.

The University of Oregon was eliminated.
