Opeth @ 2017 Copenhell

Opeth is one of my all-time favorite bands. I love all of their albums, especially their pre-2008 material. Unlike some, I do like their last four albums, but not nearly as much as their earlier releases. So when I took a peek at their setlist….

… and saw that only two songs were not off their last four albums, the thought that I was going to see them again in their entirety in a few weeks in Sweden, and that I really wanted to see Myrkur (a band I probably have little chance of seeing again), I made the decision to bolt after three songs to see Myrkur (which resulted in me only missing part of Myrkur’s first song).

I don’t regret the decision even though I would have loved to have heard Deliverance live for something like the tenth time. By the way, Opeth is now the only band I have seen in four different countries. I’ll see them for the third time in their native Sweden on July 15. I much prefer them outside of Scandinavia as I can understand Mikael’s between-songs banter when he isn’t speaking in Swedish.

Hopefully, at the Gefle Metal Festival–were they will be headlining and hopefully playing a longer set, we’ll get to hear at least a song or two off of each of the “Blackwater Park” and “My Arms, Your Hearse” albums.

Baest is the first band I saw on Day 3 of 2017 Copenhell. The skies opened when they hit the stage and the audience (and photographers) got drenched. I didn’t change lenses due to the rain, so I don’t have a total band, wide-angle shot.

From chatting with them after their set it looks like the first Baest album will come out in 2018. Baest, from Aarhus, Denmark, will play at Roskilde on Monday, but my first day at the Roskilde Festival will be Wednesday.

No, this is not Dave Mustaine. That was last year. Copenhell does not repeat acts on consecutive years.

This photo is the future. Slægt is from Denmark, and with any luck, they will be the best thing to come out of Denmark since King Diamond. (Lars Ulrich doesn’t count since everything Metallica has done since Cliff Burton died–especially the drums–has been awful.)

Slægt’s new album is the most amazing thing a bunch of barely 20-year olds have done in decades. You can listen to it here. You can like and follow them on Facebook here.
