Creating a new ukiyo-e on a storefront in Nihonbashi (Tokyo, Japan)
On an unseasonably cold evening in late November, we came upon this man painting (I think) an original ukiyo-e in the Nihonbashi part of Tokyo. If you want to see the finished result you’ll need to roam the streets of Nihonbashi after (or before) business hours as this can only be seen when the shop is closed.

I have shown this scene (the Mt. Fuji piece anyway) zoomed in a couple times before. Today’s pic is a much more general overview of the bulk of Shinjuku Ku with the main Shinjuku skyscraper buildings in the distant center, a bit of Nakano Ku in the distance to the right and a bit of Shibuya Ku in the distance to the left.

Underneath this photo/sign of Mt. Fuji it says, “On a day with good weather, this is what Mt. Fuji looks like.” The reason for such a sign is that 95%+ of the time, you can’t see Mt. Fuji from this location. Mt. Fuji is usually covered in clouds. Even when it isn’t, there is usually enough haze and humidity in the air that you can’t see Mt. Fuji from Kamakura. To improve your odds, arrive at this location just before the sun sets and you may be able to see the haze magically dissipate before your eyes and the sun set majestically behind Mt. Fuji.
