The weekend I visited Aarhus, Denmark (July 2011) was not a great one for the weather. However, even though I experienced some cloudy skies and rain in Aarhus, back “home” in Copenhagen things got really nasty and the city experienced its worst flood in history. I’ll post some photos from the aftermath of Copenhagen’s flood one of these days. Today’s photo features the longest and tallest church in Denmark. Building began over 800 years ago and the Aarhus Cathedral was completed about 700 years ago. Aarhus Canal is in the foreground.

Frogner Park (Frognerparken) is one of the most interesting parks I have ever visited. Luckily I’ve had the chance twice. The first time this view wasn’t as nice as the church in the background was undergoing repairs and was covered in scaffolding. Three years later (last summer) the scene looked better. Little did anyone know at the time, less than a week later lovely and peaceful Oslo would turn into chaos with the terrorist attacks launched by Anders Behring Breivik.

I took today’s photo one year ago. Stockholm is a wonderful city. Unfortunately, I only had half a day there. Someday I need to go back for a more extended visit.

This time last year I was wrapping up my stay in Denmark. On nearly my last day I took a bike ride from Copenhagen to the south side of the airport to visit the cute little town of Dragør. Dragør consists of street after street of little yellow houses with either red tiles or thatched roofs. If memory serves, cars aren’t allowed on the cobblestone streets unless they live there so wandering through the narrow streets is lots of fun. However, if quaint, Danish architecture isn’t your thing you can head to the water to check out the lovely harbor.

Although not in the above photo, boats were coming in and out of the harbor bearing flags of their origin. I saw boats from Sweden, Norway, Germany, and of course Denmark.

Dragør is only a dozen or so kilometers from Copenhagen, but it seems like a different world.
