Planty Park

Planty Park encircling Old Town (Krakow, Poland)

Krakow is full of surprises and Planty Park is certainly one of them. An entire (oval-shaped) Old Town wrapped in a lovely old park that changes (with works of art, statues, ponds, bridges, flower gardens, etc.) as you walk or ride your bike through it? Count me in!

If you are from the USA… Imagine if Golden Gate Park or Central Park weren’t boring rectangles but encirclements of districts of the city, and you’ll get the idea.

Where in Planty Park did today’s photomerge come from? The building on the far left is the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre.

Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec across the Vistula River

I rented a bike and rode almost 20 miles on Thursday. The ride was good except for the heat. My weather app said something like 88°, feels like 96°. With the humidity and bright sun, it felt more like 100° to me.

Anyway, my halfway point was here. After visiting the abbey, instead of taking the same route home, I hired a guy with a boat to take me and my bike across the river for this view before heading back to Krakow Old Town on the northern side of the river.

Not many tourists in Krakow at the moment thanks to Covid-19. The good news is you can take photos like this one without loads of people getting in the way. The bad news is some places are closed, and getting a tour can be difficult.

Denmark crushes Russia to make final 16

UEFA Festival (Copenhagen, Denmark)

Today’s photo is from a week ago. I was riding home on my bike and noticed significant activity in the aforementioned area (Ofelia Plads) of Copenhagen. I investigated and found out that soccer was happening every night at this location for UEFA EURO 2020 (in 2021), even if Denmark wasn’t playing. Entrance to the event was free for those vaccinated or who had tested negative for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. (Testing is everywhere and free in Denmark so businesses are open much more than in other countries. Many businesses require their employees, who haven’t been vaccinated, to be tested multiple times a week.)

Anyway, I didn’t stick around for the match as it was getting chilly and I was in shorts and a t-shirt when I really needed pants and three layers. That was the last time I was somewhat cold as it has been very hot ever since.

If you haven’t heard, Denmark pulled off an amazing victory over Russia 4-1 last night (in Copenhagen) that landed them in the final 16 teams even though they went just 1-2 in their group. A heart attack by their best player, in their first game, coupled with this victory has the sports world talking about this Cinderella story that is Denmark in UEFA EURO 2020.
