Iceland has some other-worldly landscapes. This is a 7-photo photomerge so to get a sense of the scale, take note of the tiny human near the top of the photo, just right of center.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón was my last stop of the day before turning around on the ring road to head back to my abode in Vik, Iceland. I was tired and didn’t know what to expect as my phone was dead so I was merely going to places I had written down, not knowing or remembering exactly what they were.

You have to walk over a bit of a hill to get to the lake. When I got to the top, with my first view of the scene, my breath was completely taken away. I don’t think I had ever seen something so unusual and beautiful.

Sólheimajökull

Sólheimajökull

This place, at the bottom of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier or ice cap, is fascinating. This lake, with a few ice cubes in it, didn’t exist a decade ago. If climate change (global warming) continues at its current pace, the glaciers on Iceland will be gone in a century.
