Tom Araya sings a lullaby

@COPENHELL #copenhell @Slayer

I was hoping to see Slayer one last time (although I saw them in the 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s) after they announced their retirement (“Final World Tour”) earlier this year. However, with Slayer shows happening in Denmark and Sweden in December I doubt they will show up at the festivals I will be at next summer. So it looks like today’s photo (from 2017 Copenhell) will be from the last time I ever saw Slayer live.

Happy birthday, Gary Holt!

Gary and I both grew up in the East Bay. Ironically, even though I’ve seen him twice, I’ve never seen him play in the USA. I saw him in Copenhagen, with Exodus, in 2008 and then again with Slayer last year (also in Copenhagen). At the end of next month I’ll see him again in Copenhagen, playing guitar for Exodus.

Last summer I saw Gary with Slayer at Copenhell. This summer I’ll see him with Exodus at Copenhell. Even though Gary and I both grew up in the same era in the same East Bay, the only three times I’ve seen him play live are in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Jeff Hanneman (1964-2013)

One of Slayer’s guitarists died a couple days ago. I can’t say that I’m all that surprised. While a flesh-eating bacteria, apparently contracted by a spider bite in 2011, is being partially blamed for Jeff Hanneman’s liver failure, the last time I saw him in 2009 he didn’t look very healthy. He looked great when I saw him in the 1980s and 1990s, but it didn’t seem to me in 2009 that he would continue for long.

I’m sorry to see him go. He wrote some of my favorite Slayer tunes.

Slayer in Tokyo, Japan – Part 3

This entry will wrap up the Slayer series. I will probably have another post or two on other Loud Park 2009 acts in the future.

Tom does a fine job of singing the most morbid lyrics with a smile on his face.

Kerry didn’t have spiked arms on this evening, like he has when I have seen Slayer in the past, but he looked great anyway.

World Painted Blood was still a couple of weeks from being released when Slayer played at Loud Park in October of 2009. Tom didn’t have the lyrics down for the new songs so he looked down at cue cards when they played about three new tunes.
