Mt. Ashland Ski Area reopens
After taking a few weeks off due to lack of snow, Mt. Ashland Ski Area opened up again this morning thanks to the snow that began on Saturday night and is continuing to fall.

I have had cameras that have the capability to shoot in RAW for over four years now. However, every time I have taken RAW photos I have done nothing with them. I have tried to convert them to .jpg format without much success. Usually my out-of-camera .jpg looked better than my converted RAW image that I worked on for 5-10 minutes.
Today, however, I believe I have made a breakthrough. These .jpgs didn’t look very good no matter what I did in Photoshop to them so I struggled with the RAW images and finally came up with something better than the original. What do you think?

This second photo is of John Javna. He spoke at the Ashland Martin Luther King Jr Holiday Celebration. He is a major reason why we have ScienceWorks in Ashland. My son loves his Uncle John’s Bathroom Readers. On this occasion he delivered a message about the Ashland Food Project.

We finally have a bit of precipitation going on this week. Today’s photo is from my Sunday morning walk through Lithia Park while it was snowing a couple days ago.
Ashland Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration
I took today’s photo today at the 24th Annual Ashland Martin Luther King Junior Holiday Celebration. I’ll post some more photos from today’s event over the coming week or two.
Tokina 11-16mm evening panorama

Today’s photo is one of the first I took with a new lens–the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon. I tried to stitch (photomerge) three images together to get about 200 degrees worth of Ashland, but Photoshop was not willing. Perhaps I’ll try to do it manually in Photoshop.
Mt. Ashland is to the left of center. Wagner Butte is to the right of center. Ashland High School had something going on at the football field so the lights were on and that caused the brightness to the left of center. The brightness near the far right is the Ashland Springs Hotel. The lines in the lower-left half on the bottom are the cars going up and down I-5.
I took this about 15 minutes after sunset on my D7000 at f/4 for 30 seconds at ISO 100. I cropped the bottom and top off the 11mm picture to give it more of a panorama feel.

Sledding season
Sledding on Mt. Ashland
We headed up to Mt. Ashland last weekend not to ski but to sled. Normally, January is the height of the ski season but not this year. With little snow, the ski resort closed a few weeks back and won’t reopen until next week at the earliest.
The ski runs sit empty–even on a weekend in January. The sledding isn’t even ideal as there are rocks, bare spots, and the ground has more ice than snow on it. These two had a blast though.
Churchill Hall before renovation
Today’s photo is from the archives–March 2009 to be more exact. Currently, Churchill Hall on the SOU campus is under construction so there are fences and things making this view less pleasing. While the construction is mostly for the interior, one thing will change when things are completed. All those ancient swamp coolers in the windows of the above picture will certainly be gone.
